Ubisoft, the French gaming publisher behind iconic games Assassins Creed and Far Cry, has revealed its first official blockchain-based game, Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles.

The announcement was made during Oasys’s special event at Kyoto in which Ubisoft released a teaser trailer of the game. While the trailer did not reveal any gameplay footage, it hinted at a gameplay style reminiscent of popular team-based skill games like Smite and League of Legends. Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles' is set to be a player-versus-player (PVP) tactical team-based game, designed for PC.

Champion Tactics - What We Know

Ubisoft’s first NFT game looks to feature a team-based game with lots of competitive potential. Players will assemble a team of mythical champions and engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players.

Through a dedicated game client, Champion Tactics will be an immersive experience tailored for desktop gaming. The game will be built on the Oasys blockchain, a cutting-edge platform known for its high speed, zero gas fee scalability, and robust security.

I know what you’re thinking - will the game be free to play?

For now, Ubisoft has only revealed that there will be a free drop at launch. But has yet to explicitly claim that it will be a free to play web3 game.

Ubisoft’s Rise From the Deed To Web3 Gaming

Although this is Ubisoft's official foray into web3 gaming, it is not the company's first attempt to break through the industry.

Ubisoft previously experimented in a blockchain infused game title, Project Q. Revealed as a team-based game, the game wasn’t explicitly marketed as a web3 game but only sprinkled it blockchain terms during its development.

The terms received mixed reactions from fans, with the most vehement NFT doubters having the loudest takes on the subject matter. Ultimately, Ubisoft announced the cancellation of Project Q in April 2022.

Despite the challenges faced by Ubisoft and other web3 gaming companies, the web3 gaming industry continues to propel its innovation, with companies like Square Enix and Epic Games leading the charge with new titles and the addition of web3 games onto familiar traditional gaming platforms.

As Ubisoft embarks on this new venture, gaming enthusiasts eagerly await further updates and announcements about the game. The future looks bright for web3 gaming, and Ubisoft's entry into the space is sure to contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of blockchain-based gaming.
