Google Play Store has officially announced its support for blockchain games. In a blog post released yesterday, the tech giant has introduced new rules that will allow web3 games and apps to thrive on its platform, albeit under certain regulations. Google aims to provide a transparent and secure environment for users to explore and enjoy NFT-based gaming experiences.
Google Play Store Regulations
Unlike its mobile app competitor, Apple App Store, Google showcases its open-mindedness toward the future of gaming with the addition of blockchain games on its platform but cites its need for balancing innovation with its duty to protect users.
As we’ve seen from the newly released regulations, it's all about transparency, safety, and a resounding no for any sort of gambling, as outlined in Google’s Real-Money Gambling, Games, and Contests policy.
Blockchain game developers will be required to disclose the status of their games as blockchain games on their content pages. This disclosure will inform users that the game incorporates blockchain technology and features NFTs (non-fungible tokens). Similar to Epic Games’ policy, this disclosure will ensure that users have a clear understanding of what they can expect from the game.
Google will allow game developers to offer in-game NFTs to players, enabling unique and collectible items within the game. However, certain limitations are in place to ensure a safe and fair gaming environment. NFTs cannot be wagered, and sweepstakes will not be permitted. Any wagering or betting mechanics will require developers to meet Google's gambling eligibility requirements. Additionally, developers will not be allowed to promote crypto NFT trading activities within their games.
Currently, Google is testing out the features with certain web3 companies on the refinement of its policies with NFTS. One such collaboration is with Mythical Games, the developer of NFL Rivals, and Reddit, the popular message board giant. Through these partnerships, Google aims to establish comprehensive guidelines that strike a balance between innovation and user protection.
The new regulations from Google Play Store are expected to be implemented by the end of the year.
Google’s recent move is set to boost the recognition of NFT games within the mainstream gaming industry. As blockchain technology continues to evolve, more opportunities for developers and players are likely to emerge, creating a vibrant and inclusive ecosystem for web3 gamers.
Google Play Store's embrace of NFT games marks a significant milestone in the blockchain gaming landscape. By introducing regulations that ensure transparency and user safety, Google aims to foster the growth of innovative and engaging gaming experiences. With the collaboration of industry leaders and continuous refinement of policies, the future of NFT games on the Google Play Store looks promising, opening up new avenues for developers and gamers alike.
