Splinterlands, the popular blockchain-based game, is set to revolutionize its reward system by removing the barrier that required players to own a certain value of cards to progress into higher leagues. Instead, the game will now incentivize players to hold staked SPS tokens, introducing a new formula that enhances match rewards. This article explores the upcoming changes and their potential impact on the game and its players.A Shift in Reward Calculation
The Splinterlands team has been steadily integrating the SPS token into their game system since its introduction two years ago. Now, they plan to leverage staked SPS tokens as a measurement for generating rewards. Currently, players' Collection scores, determined by the number of cards in their accounts, gate access to higher-ranked leagues. However, this impending change aims to disrupt the established status quo, creating ripples throughout the community.

The New System: Stake SPS for Extra Rewards
Expected to launch on July 6th, the new system will utilize staked SPS tokens as part of the reward points calculation. Reward points determine the amount of SPS won from a match, as well as the number of daily and seasonal chests players earn. Staked SPS will introduce a reward points multiplier, which will be factored in after considering existing modifiers such as gold foil cards and win streaks. Notably, the current reward points bonuses will remain unchanged.

Breaking the Gate to Higher Leagues
One of the key advantages of the new system is the removal of the hard gate that limited access to higher leagues. With this change, any player can aspire to reach any league rank, irrespective of their staked SPS holdings. However, it's important to note that substantial rewards will still require a certain amount of staked SPS tokens, making it worthwhile for players to have some holdings.

Rewards Tiers and Delegation/Rental Options
A chart provided by Splinterlands outlines the SPS token requirements for different reward tiers. To receive rewards comparable to the current system, players should aim for the 10x column, as the staked SPS reward points multiplier can reach a maximum of 13.3x before capping out. Additionally, Splinterlands offers a delegation system for staked SPS tokens, and they plan to introduce an SPS rental market. This rental market will allow players to bid with the desired amount of SPS tokens they wish to rent, paid in DEC tokens. Third-party sites may also offer enhanced rental and delegation functionality in the future.

The removal of the card value restriction is expected to have a significant impact on the card market. Players who held cards solely for their Collection score will now have the option to sell them, potentially leading to lower prices for common and lower-valued cards. On the flip side, this change may make it easier for new players to build their own collections due to the availability of cheaper cards and rentals. Furthermore, this shift in the reward system paves the way for future developments, such as card merging and staking in the upcoming land gameplay phase.

Final Thought
Splinterlands' decision to introduce staked SPS tokens as a measure of reward points marks a significant shift in the game's mechanics. By removing the card value barrier, the game aims to create a more inclusive and dynamic playing environment. Additionally, this change is expected to increase the value and utility of the SPS token, as evident from the token's recent 6% surge in value since the official announcement. As players and enthusiasts await the launch of the new system, the Splinterlands community can anticipate exciting opportunities and a fresh perspective on gameplay and rewards.
