Splinterlands, the popular online trading card game, has announced a new set of 43 soulbound reward cards as part of the Chaos Legion set. These new cards will be available to players on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, and will not be able to be transferred, rented/delegated, burned, or sold until they go out of print.
The introduction of soulbound reward cards is a key element in the game’s overall goal of making the game more engaging for players and encouraging them to focus on growing their accounts over the long term. Having certain items that can only be obtained through gameplay, rather than just being purchased on the market, increases the value of playing ranked battles, moving up to higher leagues, and most importantly, combining cards.
The fact that these reward cards will eventually become transferable means that players will still be able to realize their value in the future. This can be viewed as a kind of long-term NFT staking. The new soulbound reward cards will be available in loot chests, and it is estimated that roughly 1–2 years after this initial release of soulbound reward cards, a new set of soulbound reward cards will be associated with the Rebellion set.
At that point, the current set of soulbound reward cards will no longer be available in loot chests, and the old set will then be able to become unbound by staking DEC into the cards. A portion of the DEC can then be reclaimed later by burning them.
The new set of soulbound reward cards will contain a total of 43 cards with the following breakdown of type, element, and rarity: 37 monster cards, 6 Summoner cards, 12 Legendary cards, 7 Epic cards, 12 Rare cards, and 12 Common cards.
Additionally, the set will introduce three new abilities: Conscript, Martyr, and Weapons Training. Conscript is a new ability available on Summoners only, which allows players to use one more Gladiator card in the battle than normal. Martyr is an ability that gives adjacent characters +1 to all stats when a character with the ability dies in battle. Weapons Training is an ability that “trains” adjacent characters with no attack, thereby giving them an attack of the same type as the character with the Weapons Training ability.
The introduction of these new soulbound reward cards is expected to bring new excitement and engagement to the game, encouraging players to focus on growing their accounts over the long term. The new abilities and positioning elements will also add new dimensions to the gameplay, making the game even more challenging and rewarding.
