Eve Frontier: A New Name and Direction
CCP Games, known for creating Eve Online, revealed that its upcoming blockchain-based survival game, formerly called Project Awakening, will now launch as Eve Frontier. This shift in branding reflects a broader vision for the game. Now that players can alter and grow the game environment on their own, teamwork will be emphasized greatly. CCP Games founder and CEO Hilmar Veigar PĂ©tursson says that the game's survival rules force players to cooperate or else they will fail.

CCP Games announced that Eve Frontier is being developed on the Ethereum blockchain in conjunction with the rebranding. The game will feature multiple crypto tokens based on the ERC-20 standard, widely recognized in the Ethereum ecosystem. In addition to its integration with Ethereum, Eve Frontier will be developed on Redstone, an Ethereum layer-2 network powered by Optimism technology. This layer-2 network will help facilitate on-chain, autonomous gaming worlds, adding more depth to the player experience.
EVE and LUX Tokens
The game will include two primary tokens: EVE and LUX. The EVE Token, minted on Ethereum, is described as a utility token that can be exchanged for external value. Meanwhile, the LUX Token will focus on in-game transactions. Players and alliances can create their own currencies, which can be used to support and reward developers who contribute to the game world. This decentralized, player-driven economy opens up unique opportunities for player engagement and contribution.

Eve Frontier is being developed using CCP's in-house Carbon game engine, which the studio plans to make open-source. In addition to Carbon, the game uses the MUD engine developed by Lattice, a key player in Redstone's development.Ethereum's programming language, Solidity, allows users and developers to write smart contracts and build decentralized applications, or dapps. With the use of blockchain technology, this infrastructure provides the possibility of an infinitely configurable gaming environment in which players can alter the features and dynamics of the game.
CCP is introducing a concept called "Smart Assemblies," where the core of the on-chain, sandbox universe is created by the studio, and the community can build around it. Players will be able to construct various infrastructures, such as storage facilities, trading posts, and defensive structures. These structures can also have programmable layers, allowing for deeper customization and player expression. For example, a Smart Storage Unit (SSU) could serve multiple purposes, from storing inventory to being coded as a marketplace, quest giver, or even an arcade machine.
The next closed beta playtest for Eve Frontier is scheduled for September 27, according to a tweet thread from Lattice, a Redstone builder. An official trailer has been released on YouTube, teasing “founder access” coming soon for PC and Mac users. With this new survival-focused blockchain game, CCP has great hopes for it. It will be evolving over the next few months.
To bolster its blockchain endeavors, CCP Games raised $40 million in funding in 2023 under the direction of venture capital powerhouse Andreessen Horowitz. This funding marks a significant step toward realizing the ambitious goals set for Eve Frontier. With the backing of such prominent investors, the game’s development will likely push the boundaries of blockchain integration in gaming.
In a statement, Pétursson highlighted how Eve Frontier redefines the survival genre by combining intense space survival gameplay with a player-driven sandbox universe. Every decision players make will have ripple effects across the game’s expansive world, offering countless opportunities for strategic thinking and collaboration. Players will be able to shape economies, exploit space resources, and build their legacy in this dark and unpredictable universe.
