Sonic, a gaming-focused layer 2 on the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM), has surpassed one million monthly active users. This significant milestone demonstrates the growing interest in Web3 games. During its testnet phase, Sonic generated over 600 million transactions from these users. This surge in user activity can be credited to the Odyssey testnet campaign. The campaign encouraged users to play and transact by offering rewards, such as "rings," for completing various tasks within the ecosystem.
Story of the Odyssey Testnet Campaign
The Odyssey campaign was a major factor in the success of Sonic's testnet. Users who participated in the campaign earned "rings" by transacting on the testnet and completing tasks. These tasks often involved interacting with games within Sonic’s ecosystem. The testnet offered eight different games, including popular titles like Rage Effect, LowLifeForms, and JogoJogo. Prediction-based game JogoJogo was especially popular, drawing in over 250,000 players.
Sonic is a participant in the play-to-earn, or Web3 gaming, movement in the gaming industry. Through the creation of economies where players can own goods with real-world value, this model compensates players for their time and labor. However, the industry faces challenges in reaching mainstream users. A significant barrier is the current lack of high-quality games that appeal to a broader audience.
The Need for "Soft" Infrastructure in Web3 Gaming
According to Chris Zhu, CEO of Sonic SVM, the biggest hurdle for Web3 game builders is the absence of essential "soft" infrastructure. This infrastructure includes support for go-to-market strategies, services to help projects get started, and marketing tactics for post-launch phases. Zhu emphasized that a game’s success isn’t solely dependent on its technical aspects. The "soft" infrastructure Sonic provides aims to boost awareness for both individual games and Web3 gaming on Solana.
At the end of June, Sonic SVM secured $12 million in a Series A funding round led by Bitkraft Ventures. This brings the total capital raised by Sonic to $16 million. This investment is probably going to be very important in helping to construct the "soft" infrastructure that Web3 gaming needs in order to function and to encourage wider adoption.

Teaching the general public to play Web3 games is one of the key obstacles to their acceptance. A lot of the Web3 games that are out nowadays have come under fire for putting money ahead of good gameplay. Wider acceptance is hampered, in Zhu's opinion, by a lack of knowledge regarding the distinctions between Web2 and Web3 gaming economies. He emphasized the significance of creating entertaining venues for players and the demand for greater information regarding Web3 gaming.
Solana’s Role in Web3 Gaming
A prominent blockchain for Web3 gaming communities is starting to emerge: Solana. Zhu from Sonic emphasized Solana's capacity to rise to the top of this market. The Ronin Network, which is utilized by Axie Infinity, Immutable X, MultiverX, Oasys, and Polygon, is another noteworthy blockchain network for gaming. The Web3 gaming market is expanding thanks in part to these platforms.

Although there are still obstacles, Sonic's testnet success highlights the growing interest in Web3 gaming. To encourage wider adoption, the development of "soft" infrastructure and player education will be prioritized. With solid support and creative tactics, Sonic is positioned to be a major player in Web3 gaming going forward.
