A New Chapter Begins with Nightreign
FromSoftware has launched its latest title, Elden Ring: Nightreign. It’s a standalone game that expands the world of the Elden Ring but moves in a different direction. Published by Bandai Namco, the game is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. While it keeps the dark and heavy tone fans love, the focus now shifts to multiplayer survival and co-op action. This new gameplay direction sets it apart from the original.
The story takes place in Limveld, a brand-new region full of danger, mystery, and eerie landscapes. This is not a direct sequel. It’s a separate story, built within the same universe. Players take on the role of Nightfarers. Each Nightfarer has a unique set of weapons and abilities. The goal is to survive a three-day and night cycle, where enemies grow stronger and more aggressive as time passes.
Unlike the open-world style of the original Elden Ring, Nightreign uses a session-based format. Every run is different. Biomes shift. Enemy placements change. Loot and resources don’t stay in the same spot. This design keeps players alert. Each cycle ends with a major boss fight. Some of these bosses are new, but fans might spot a few surprises from past games. It keeps things exciting, even for seasoned FromSoftware veterans.

Teamwork is Key, But Solo is Welcome
The game supports co-op teams of up to three players. Working together helps with survival and combat. Each player can use their Nightfarer’s skills to support the team. Still, solo players can take the challenge head-on. Going alone is tough but possible. It pushes players to think more about movement, timing, and resource use. Every choice matters. Exploring too long or picking the wrong fight can cost a run.
The world shrinks as time passes. This effect, called the Night’s Tide, pushes players to move forward. Staying in one place isn’t safe. It adds pressure. It also increases tension and forces cooperation. On the final night, a massive boss known as the Nightlord appears. These enemies are some of the hardest in the game. They test everything a player has learned during the run.
Even if you fail, progress doesn’t disappear. Players collect relics during each run. These relics upgrade Nightfarers and unlock new customization options. Over time, characters become stronger and more specialized. There’s also a slow reveal of personal backstories and hidden lore. Every session adds more layers to the overall narrative. It rewards players who keep coming back.

Eight Unique Nightfarers
At launch, the game offers eight different Nightfarers. Each one starts with a distinct weapon and playstyle. This variety allows players to try new strategies and find a character that suits them. From fast melee builds to long-range magic users, the choices help make each run feel different. Over time, you can build your favorite Nightfarer into a powerhouse with upgrades from previous sessions.
Elden Ring: Nightreign is available in multiple versions. The Standard and Deluxe digital editions can be bought online. There’s also a physical Collector’s Edition for console players. It includes bonus content for fans who want more than just the base game. The worldwide launch was on May 30, so players can dive in right away.
FromSoftware is trying something new, but it hasn’t lost what makes its games special. Nightreign keeps the signature challenge and dark world-building. But it also adds fresh systems like real-time survival, shrinking zones, and character progression that carries forward. It feels different but still belongs in the same universe. For those who enjoy a tough but rewarding game, this is a fresh reason to return.
