Dr Disrespect, real name Guy Beahm, co-founded the game studio Midnight Society. They launched a game called DEADROP, which garnered a lot of attention. However, on June 24, Midnight Society severed ties with Beahm. This decision followed allegations that he had been inappropriately messaging minors before his ban from Twitch in 2020.
Beahm's Response to Allegations
On June 25, Beahm admitted to the allegations but claimed there was "no wrongdoing." He insisted that the messages were just "casual, mutual conversations." Addressing his departure from Midnight Society, he described it as a "painful decision." Beahm said he stepped down to avoid jeopardizing the studio's culture.
Many players reacted strongly to Beahm's exit. A number of them have abandoned DEADROP, declaring the game "dead" without Dr Disrespect's involvement. This mass exodus of players reflects their disappointment and perhaps their lack of confidence in the game's future without its prominent co-founder.In addition to player loss, the Midnight Society Founders Pass NFT saw a significant drop in value. The price of the NFT fell by around $300, a steep decline. According to OpenSea, the last sale of the NFT was at 0.0133 ETH, roughly $44.85 or £35.42. Before this drop, some sales were around $400, with one piece even selling for $1,178. Despite many NFTs being listed for sale, some remain unsold at prices above $100 as players try to recover their investments.
Perks of the Founders Pass NFT
The Founders Pass NFT had offered several perks to its holders. It allowed players to access 'snapshot' versions of DEADROP builds. It also provided unique 'Variant' characters, profile photos, and voting rights on game features. Additionally, there were meet-and-greet events with the studio, where pass owners could play against Beahm dressed in his Dr Disrespect persona.
Despite the turmoil, Beahm has announced plans to return to streaming after an extended vacation. However, he will no longer be involved with DEADROP. This leaves Midnight Society to navigate the challenges ahead without one of its key figures.
