Pancake Protectors is Shutting Down
GameFi platform MOBOX recently announced that Pancake Protectors, a tower defense game powered by PancakeSwap, will be closing down after Season 37 (S37) ends. Originally launched in May 2023 as a rebranded version of MOland Defense, the game had a full run for over a year. Despite its launch as a rebranded title, the game’s lifecycle is now coming to a close. The developers confirmed that both the PancakeSwap and MOBOX versions will be replaced with a new game titled Dragon Defense, set for release in November 2024.

The reason behind the closure of Pancake Protectors is tied to the game's unsustainable nature. In an announcement, the game's studio stated that they have decided it is no longer feasible to continue working on the game. The decision was made due to a lack of significant player growth and inadequate in-app purchase revenue. In fact, the admin from PancakeSwap’s Telegram group noted that the studio’s partner, who was responsible for developing the game, made the surprise decision to end the game. This highlights the financial troubles or internal issues that may have influenced the studio’s conclusion.
Although the game is closing down, the team behind Pancake Protectors has planned an eventful final season for players. To ensure that dedicated players are rewarded for their time, the developers are making several changes in Season 37. This season will be the last opportunity for players to earn rewards in the form of $CAKE.
$CAKE Rewards in Season 37
In Season 37, all $CAKE rewards left in the prize pool will be distributed. Additionally, $CAKE spending during this season will have a different impact. Rather than increasing the total prize pool, 35% of any $CAKE spent will go toward increasing the leaderboard rewards. After Season 37 concludes, players will be able to claim all of their awards. October 17 marked the start of this final season, which will run for 14 days, ending on October 31.

Once Season 37 concludes, several game features will be disabled. Staking, market transactions, and the ability to spend $CAKE will no longer be available. Players will have their staked $CAKE automatically returned. After the conclusion of S37, Season 38 will begin, but it will be entirely different from previous seasons. S38 will only last for 7 days and will be a period for players to withdraw any remaining $CAKE from the game. This is the final chance to retrieve rewards before the game shuts down for good.
To thank the community for their support, all players from both the PancakeSwap and MOBOX versions of the game will receive an exclusive starter pack for Dragonverse Neo. This 3D open-world game was revealed by MOBOX in December 2023, and players will be able to use the starter pack in Dragon Defense, the game that will replace Pancake Protectors. Dragon Defense will feature similar tower defense gameplay and is set to be released in November 2024.
Pancake Protectors is not the only PancakeSwap-branded web3 game to shut down. Along with the announcement of Pancake Protectors’ closure, the studio also revealed that the web3 MMORPG Shadow Realms would be closing. Similar to Pancake Protectors, Shadow Realms will go through its own final season, followed by a withdrawal period. This game had its Beta Season in April 2024 and is now ending just a few months after launch.
Despite the closures, the developers have expressed optimism for the future. They’ve highlighted the importance of moving toward new opportunities and adventures. The announcement concluded with a heartfelt message of gratitude, thanking players for their years of dedication and the friendships they’ve built. The memories created within the community are truly valued by the team.
In the wake of these closures, both games are making way for new experiences, such as Dragon Defense. For fans of tower defense games and web3-powered platforms, this shift opens up fresh opportunities for gaming enjoyment.
