Multimedia entertainment giant Square Enix is ramping up efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, Web3, and cloud technologies into its operations in 2024.

The company's President, Takashi Kiryu, outlined this strategic shift in a recent New Year's letter, emphasizing Square Enix's commitment to being at the forefront of technological innovation - especially on the front of web3 and blockchain.

New Year, Same Direction

Kiryu declared that Square Enix aims to be "aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies" to enhance content development and publishing functions. As part of their plan, the company is focusing on integrating AI technologies, including the use of ChatGPT, to elevate the gaming experience and streamline various processes.

The gaming giant, known for iconic franchises such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, is making significant strides in the web3 gaming space. Square Enix recently launched the NFT project Symbiogenesis in December 2021, a venture that had been teased throughout the year with a rich lore.

Notably, Square Enix celebrated the anniversary of the beloved Final Fantasy VII by releasing NFTs earlier in the year, showcasing its unwavering support for the intersection of NFTs and gaming. The company's foray into the world of non-fungible tokens indicates its dedication to embracing new and innovative technologies in the gaming industry.

In contrast, rival Sega Corporation decided to pump the brakes on blockchain gaming in Q3 of 2023, citing challenges within the cryptocurrency space. While Square Enix charges ahead, Sega's cautious approach reflects the complexities and uncertainties surrounding blockchain technology in the gaming sector.

Final Thoughts

Square Enix's commitment to advancing technologies such as web3 and blockchain positions itself into a proactive role in shaping the type of games it produces in the future. So far, we have successful initiatives like Symbiogenesis that integrate AI to craft a compelling and interesting narrative. As Square Enix navigates these uncharted territories, players can anticipate a transformative gaming experience, marking a compelling chapter in the industry's technological evolution.
