Risc Zero, a decentralized zero-knowledge (ZK) compute marketplace, has released the incentivized testnet for its platform, "Boundless." This incentivized testnet, also known as the "Mainnet Beta," is a major achievement for Risk Zero, which is moving towards full decentralization.

The platform will introduce its mainnet in the next few months. Meanwhile, Boundless testnet is running on the Ethereum L2 network created by Coinbase called Base. The platform offers a decentralized platform on which developers can create and test applications.

What Is Boundless?

Boundless is a decentralized zero-knowledge compute marketplace where developers can gain access to ZK proofs. ZK proofs are cryptographic tools that are used to preserve privacy for applications, rollups, and bridges. Boundless, therefore, links up developers that require these proofs with ZK provers, a decentralized network of miners capable of generating and verifying the proofs.

In contrast to the conventional centralized approach, this decentralized system provides developers with a more transparent and scalable way of processing ZK proofs. It eliminates the necessity to rely on centralized parties and enables anyone to provide computing power and earn a reward on every cryptographic proof they validate by using the right hardware.

Moreover, the Boundless testnet will establish an open proving market of ZK technology. The aim is to ensure that anyone can take part in the ZK mining process, which is important in network growth. It also promotes fairness, efficiency and security.

Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Technology

Privacy protection is one of the characteristics that make ZK technology very significant in blockchain development. Transactions can easily be verified without compromising personal data, an important feature in privacy-based applications such as rollups, cross-chain bridges, and DeFi protocols.

In the case of Boundless, ZK technology allows secure and verifiable transactions across different blockchains without repeating the same tasks. This helps reduce efficiency and scalability, making blockchain systems more sustainable and affordable to developers and users.

$ZKC Token, The Heart of Boundless Ecosystem

The $ZKC token is the native utility and governance token within the Boundless ecosystem. Its key functions include:

  1. Staking and Security: Validators have to stake $ZKC tokens in order to secure the network and verify cross-chain messages. The ratio staked is based on the roles and involvement of the validator in the network.
  2. Governance: $ZKC token holders can shape the future of the Boundless protocol by voting on proposals for protocol improvements, grants, and other projects.
  3. Incentives for Provers: Provers stake $ZKC tokens to participate in proof verification auctions. Successful provers are rewarded based on the volume, speed, and complexity of the proofs they generate.

The Proof of Verifiable Work (PoVW) Consensus Mechanism

The PoVW consensus mechanism, which Boundless runs on, differs from the traditional Proof of Work (PoW) systems. Here, participants are not rewarded for generating ZK proofs. Rather, in PoVW, miners are paid to verify the validity of ZK proofs, which is both fair and efficient.

In the PoW system, however, miners are rewarded upon accomplishing computational tasks. The PoVW system further encourages institutions and individuals with high-performance GPUs to participate in the network, decentralizes the process further and makes the platform more secure.

Therefore, the PoVW enables more scalable and efficient blockchain networks by emphasizing the verification of ZK proofs.

The Incentivized Testnet and Airdrop Event

Risc Zero's Boundless testnet also offers a rewarding structure to participants. Contributors to the network can earn early allocations of the $ZKC token as early users. In the meantime, the platform has earmarked an airdrop for later this year where tokens will be distributed among active participants.

The tokens each participant will receive will depend on the amount, the speed, and the complexity of the ZK proofs they generate.

Also, users will have the opportunity to learn the Boundless ecosystem and stake their position in the mainnet launch by joining the incentivized testnet. The airdrop is also a motivation to attract early adopters into the project, which creates a strong and active community.

Innovations in Verifiable Computing

Boundless brings new developments in verifiable computing that enhance the checking of computation results. These advances facilitate the verification of the accuracy of calculations without interfering with the performance of systems. They include:

  1. Decoupling Execution from Consensus

With Boundless, developers can separate computation and consensus. This makes the processing of complex computations more efficient and scalable. It also prevents blockchain overload.

  1. Cross-Chain Interoperability

Boundless allows different blockchain ecosystems to talk to each other, share data and work together without any problems.

  1. On-Demand Scalability

Boundless Network offers developers a lot of resources, and this makes scaling extremely easy.

What Is Next?

The Boundless testnet marks the beginning of Risc Zero's journey to decentralize ZK computing. Looking ahead, the team will be launching the mainnet in Q3. The $ZKC token will also go live during the launch.

The introduction of the $ZKC and Boundless testnet shows the importance of decentralized privacy-preserving technologies in the blockchain industry. With the increasing number of developers and blockchain projects in need of privacy and scalability solutions, Boundless is one of the new entrants to keep an eye on.
