The makers of the Ethereum action game Moonray have announced a mobile auto-battler set to release early next year. This new game will complement their flagship battle arena game, offering more content to players. Set in the same "post-human" world, the mobile spinoff will use assets from the original game. Moonray token holders will be able to unlock special content and earn rewards through the spinoff game.
What Is an Auto-Battler?
An auto-battler, commonly known as "auto chess," is a strategy game in which players arrange characters into a board. The characters then automatically fight the opposition. A popular example of this genre is Teamfight Tactics by Riot Games. However, Moonray’s new entry claims to offer “more in-depth resource management and counter play.” It will also feature Web3 integration, adding a new dimension to the genre.
Expanding the Moonray Universe
This mobile game will exist in the broader Moonray “post-human” universe. The universe is already home to the original PC combat arena game and graphic novels. The early access version of the PC game launched on the Epic Games Store in July, offering a unique “play-to-airdrop” campaign. Players could earn rewards by participating in the campaign.
Moonray originally started as a role-playing game on the Bitcoin layer-2 network, Stacks. The game leaned into role-playing elements with fighting as the core gameplay. Later, the developers pivoted to focus on competitive multiplayer combat, moving the game to Ethereum. This shift was necessary to meet the game’s infrastructure needs.

The mobile auto-battler is expected to launch in Q1 2025. Though it still doesn’t have an official name, the game will incentivize competitive play with rewards. Players can earn Moonray’s MNRY token, which will be given to tournament winners. The token will also be used to unlock special content in the game. This marks the first expansion of the Moonray IP within the gaming world, but there are plans for more. According to co-founder Hans Andersson, the team aims to explore different gaming genres in the future.
Moonray has already expanded into other creative fields. Last year, they released a graphic novel titled “Mother’s Skin,” which deepened the lore of the Moonray universe. A second graphic novel, “Echoes of Ascension,” was released in July. The team is now working with animation studio ReelFX to develop animation tests. Andersson shared that the ultimate goal is to create an animated series based on the Moonray universe.

The upcoming mobile auto-battler could make the Moonray IP more accessible. Currently, Moonray’s combat arena game is only available on PC. This limits the audience to those with access to gaming computers. With the mobile release, anyone with a compatible smartphone will be able to experience Moonray’s “post-human” world. The team hopes this expansion will attract a wider audience and strengthen the Moonray brand in the gaming and entertainment industries.
