Popular streamer and YouTuber DrDisrespect has shown continued support for blockchain games in a recent tweet, despite mixed reactions from his fanbase. In his Tweet, he showcases the potential for digital collectibles and ownership of items gamers grind for, sparking discussion on its impact on gamers.
DrDisrespect, also known as the former “King of Twitch” for his impressive FPS skills in games like PUBG and Fortnite, is a well-known figure in the gaming community. He gained a large following on Twitch, where he clipped numerous gaming highlights before he switched over to YouTube.
Mixed Response?
In his latest tweet, DrDisrespect expressed his excitement for the potential of blockchain games and the opportunities they can bring for gamers. He stated in his Tweet that “The concept of digital collectibles in an online game is so exciting to me. Especially an extraction type of game.”
However, the tweet also received criticism from some of his fans who associated NFTs with scams and environmental destruction. Anticipating the criticisms, he included that “People saying scam and ‘ugh’ are just brain dead headline followers. Same people that spend a ton on skins for an annual release game.”
Some Twitter netizens did not hold back on their backlash and skepticism of his decision. Citing several issues associated with NFTs such as cheaters, money laundering, and speculation.
Despite the mixed reactions, the tweet was also met with a significant amount of support from fellow creators and fans who shared DrDisrespect's enthusiasm for blockchain games, including the team from Voxies, a strategic free-to-play NFT game.
DrDisrespect’s Game Studio
This is not the first time that DrDisrespect has received criticism for his support of blockchain technology. He founded a web3 gaming studio called Midnight Society last year that developed an upcoming NFT FPS game called Project Moon but is now renamed to Deadrop.
His move into web3 received major backlash and skepticism from traditional gamers, causing him to distance himself from NFTs for a while but still managed to build behind the scenes.
Midnight Society’s Deadrop
Now, Midnight Society is currently developing their web3 FPS game, Deadrop. The game is a Vertical Extraction Shooter (VES) that combines the level design of an arena shooter with the scope of a Battle Royale, resulting in a strategic action-packed extraction shooter.
Deadrop will be available on PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5. The game is set to have its snapshot on Marc1h 17th, giving gamers a sneak peek at what's to come.
Final Thoughts
As the gaming industry continues to evolve and blockchain technology becomes more widely adopted, it will be interesting to see how these trends impact the industry as a whole.
NFT gaming has increasingly seen brands and companies switch over to web3 due to the potential the industry has for growth. It’s interesting to see how influential figures like Dr Disrespect will impact the movement as time goes on.
