The debut of Decentraland's desktop client has been announced, with promises of major performance and graphic improvements as well as new gameplay features. The Ethereum-based metaverse game will enter a new phase when the public beta becomes available on October 22. The goal of this update is to improve the social aspects of the game by emphasizing how to make player interactions more immersive and dynamic.
Release of the Desktop Client for Decentraland
Previously, Decentraland was limited by its in-browser version, which affected both graphics and performance. The desktop client addresses these limitations, offering a much smoother and visually detailed experience. Players will now find the environment more lifelike, with improved object interactions. With this update, traversing the metaverse feels more seamless and offers a more immersive experience.

Although Decentraland's performance has long been a problem, the new desktop client promises quicker load times and more fluid gameplay. The improved performance allows for more players in the same area without crashes. According to Agnieszka Besz, Engineering Manager at Decentraland, the client has been tested with over 200 avatars in the same realm, with no issues. This is a major improvement, as the older client had a limit of 100 players per realm.
Social Focus and Upcoming Events
Decentraland is shifting its focus towards the social aspect of the metaverse. While initially, the platform aimed to attract players interested in building worlds, it found that social interactions are the real draw. The new update is designed to support this shift. The upcoming three-day music festival, starting November 20, will serve as the first major test of the new client, allowing hundreds of players to gather in one shared space.

To encourage more social interaction, Decentraland is introducing a new quest and badge achievement system. This will help track players' progress and reward them for their engagement. A similar strategy is what Decentraland intends to pursue. Other platforms, like VRChat, have effectively profited from the social components of the metaverse. It is anticipated that the new client will increase the thousands of users that have already attended Decentraland's three-day pride festival and Metaverse Fashion Week.
While the update focuses on social features, Decentraland has not forgotten about its builders. The desktop client’s improved performance means creators can design more complex worlds with higher resolution textures. The minimum hardware requirement has also been updated, but it remains accessible, with MacBooks equipped with an M1 processor and 16GB of RAM meeting the minimum specs.
Although Decentraland is not abandoning its flat-screen roots, the team is considering a future in VR. VR could provide an even more immersive social experience, with players feeling like they are physically present in the metaverse. While this is still a distant possibility, the desktop client is a step towards achieving this vision.
