Decentraland, the virtual reality platform that uses blockchain technology to enable users to create, experience, and monetize content and applications, has released a new feature called “Worlds” in beta.

Worlds are personal virtual spaces that are separate from Genesis City, Decentraland’s main virtual world, and are tied to Decentraland NAMEs. NAMEs are non-fungible tokens (NFTs) within the Decentraland ecosystem that serve as a name that can be assigned to an avatar or LAND owned by a user.

Decentraland’s Worlds are intended as a place for Decentraland citizens to build, experiment, and host events and interactive experiences without having to own LAND, which are virtual plots of land that can be owned and developed on the Decentraland platform. This lowers the barriers to becoming a creator in Decentraland, encouraging the growth and enrichment of the platform.

Individual Worlds can currently span up to 4 parcels in size (16x16 meters each), can be a maximum of 100 MB, and can host up to 100 concurrent users. However, as Worlds is in beta, these limits may change in the future, potentially increasing the size limitations of the feature in terms of both parcels and megabytes and even allowing users to host their Worlds on their own servers.

Users have a lot of creative freedom when designing their World, including the ability to define the layout of the parcels in their space and the option to limit access to specific NFT holders or passphrase holders. This allows users to customize their World to suit their needs, whether it be a grassy meadow or a neon-lit nightclub, and to control who can visit their World.

To get a World, users must first get a Decentraland NAME, which can be created for 100 MANA or purchased from a previous owner in the Marketplace. NAMEs are limited to 15 characters and must be unique, so users may need to be creative when selecting a NAME.

A World is only active if a scene has been deployed to it, so if users encounter a 404 message when trying to enter a World, it is likely that the owner has not yet deployed a scene. Users can use the Decentraland SDK to build and deploy scenes to their World.

Worlds cannot be sold or traded, but the assets within a World, such as art or interactive experiences, can be sold or traded. Users can invite other Decentraland citizens to their World by sharing the Decentraland NAME associated with the World. Users can also publish their World to the Decentraland Atlas, a directory of Worlds available to the public. This allows users to showcase their World to a wider audience and potentially monetize their creations.

Users can also host events in their World, such as concerts, workshops, and meetups. Worlds can be used for a variety of purposes, including showcasing art, hosting games and other interactive experiences, and even creating virtual real estate listings.

Worlds can be accessed through the Decentraland client, which can be downloaded from the Decentraland website. Users may encounter bugs or other issues while using Worlds as it is currently in beta, but the Decentraland team is actively working on improving and expanding the features available in Worlds.

Summary

Decentraland’s Worlds feature provides users with a personal 3D space in the metaverse to build, experiment, and host events and interactive experiences, while also lowering the barriers to becoming a creator on the Decentraland platform.
