Remember the time when your mom thought playing video games would never earn you money? Well, those days are long gone. Even before the advent of NFT(non-fungible tokens) games, traditional games have made way for digital game items to be worth more than your average family home.
Just recently, news about the purchase of the most expensive CS:GO skin ever sold has caused quite the buzz amongst the gamer community. The sale was for an astonishing $500,000 for a virtual gun in a shooter game.
The Sale
CS:GO trader and streamer zipeL, who served as the middleman for the sale, recently tweeted the details of the combined sale of a rare AK-47 skin and Karambit knife skins. The star of the show was the famous AK-47 Case Hardened skin.
Skins are virtual in-game items that alter the appearance of weapons or characters in video games. In CS:GO, they're a way for players to customise their weapons, with some skins being rarer and more sought-after than others.
The recent surge in demand for CS:GO skins is attributed to the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, the long-awaited sequel to the popular FPS game. It’s recent announcement has led old pro players and content creators to try out the game which has also drove the game’s views on twitch.
With the excitement surrounding CS:GO 2, investors have shown an increased willingness to pay top dollar for the rarest skins in the market. All skins from the previous game will be carried over into CS:GO 2. This means, the old skins will be able to benefit from the improved lighting and graphics.
Furthermore, tons of weapon cases and loot boxes have doubled or tripled in value overnight. A few other unpopular skins have also gained significant value, cementing the increased value of CS:GO assets since the announcement.
Relating to Web3 Game Assets
This development is not unlike the booming trend of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in web3 gaming, where rare digital items can fetch millions of dollars at auction. Yuga Lab’s Dookey Dash’s big winner sold his winning key for as much as $1.63 million. Monggral, the fortnite esports player, won first place through the game’s skill-based mint.
While CS:GO skins in traditional games seem a lot like NFTs, there are however some very stark differences. The key difference is that while skins are limited to their respective games, NFTs can be used across multiple platforms and have unique ownership, provable scarcity, and transferability on blockchain technology.
The top emerging NFT shooter games in the market such as Shrapnel, Deadrop, and Undead Blocks also feature in-game collectible gun skins similar to CS:GO. If these games are able to deliver the AAA gaming experience as promised, we might be able to see something very similar to zipeLs trade happen in NFT game shooters. But this time with the added benefits of blockchain technology.
Final Thoughts
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it's clear that virtual items like skins and NFTs will continue to play a significant role in the gaming economy. This record-breaking sale of the AK-47 Case Hardened skin serves as a reminder of just how valuable these digital items can be.
