Square Enix has announced the release of NFT(non-fungible tokens) collectible trading cards to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. The collection will be available on March 31st and will feature visual art of characters and iconic scenes from the game.

Square Enix is a Japanese entertainment company best known for its gaming RPG(role-playing game)  franchises like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest. Final Fantasy IIV is one of its most famous games. The 1997 released game has even sparked a modern remake and an official movie that grossed over $400 million from box office and disc media sales.

The official website cites that the collection is made up of multiple kinds of cards, with each pack costing 440 yen($3.30) which contains six physical cards and one digital exchange card with an alphanumeric code. The kinds of cards in the collection are:

  • 99 types of trading cards
  • 3 types of normal cards
  • 102 types of premium cards
  •  3 types of secret cards.

To claim ownership of the digital cards, buyers must use the Enjin Wallet cryptocurrency smartphone application, register the code found on the exchange card, and claim one Final Fantasy VII NFT of their choice once they have an Enjin account.

Square Enix has historically been interested in venturing into NFTs and web3. Just a few months ago, the company revealed its NFT collectible art game called Symbiogenesis. The project is slowly revealing hints about its features with it currently being shrouded in mystery.

The project is slated for release in Spring 2023.

Final Thoughts

Although this isn’t the first time Final Fantasy has dipped into NFTs, it still marks a significant move for the company, integrating its popular franchise spanning over decades with blockchain technology. The move has sparked mixed reactions, with certain fans disappointed over the company’s move into web3. However, certain fans are also delighted to be offered the opportunity to have a digital collectible of their favorite game.
