On September 19, Play Solana announced that they would be releasing the first-ever handheld web3 gaming device based on the Solana blockchain.
The Play Solana Gen1 (PGS1) will allow gamers to play blockchain-based games while on the move without the limitations of mobile-based gaming. Gamers will be able to choose from the wide range of games that are currently on Play Solana, which includes Star Atlas, GenoPets, and AstroSpace.
The Solana blockchain is already popular amongst gamers due to its low costs and fast transactions. While reviewing Solana meme coins, crypto commentator Sergio Zammit also states that the Solana ecosystem is developer-friendly, features active community engagement, and offers comprehensive tools. These characteristics have made Solana one of the best choices for both game developers and players.
Device details
With a PGS1, you’ll be able to play Solana games and manage assets from the comfort of a compact handheld device.
The gaming experience itself will be smooth, lag-free, and reminiscent of vintage handheld consoles like the GameBoy. It will feature a screen on the top half and vintage gaming-inspired buttons on the bottom half.
Once released, it will likely have a major impact on the world of crypto gaming, inspiring blockchains to release their own web3 gaming-dedicated devices.
Pre-order details
Pre-order details for the PGS1 will be announced at this year’s Solana Breakpoint Conference which will be held in Singapore. Collectors who currently own the Player 1 NFT will be given priority during the preorder stage and will also receive a discount on the console. These NFTs were only recently minted on September 16 via Magic Eden’s Launchpad. However, they have already sold out.
The announcement of the PGS1 coincides with the launch of Solana's new phone, the Seeker. This is Solana’s second-generation web3 smartphone following the release of the Solana Sega in early 2023.
The Seeker has not been given an official launch date yet, but the company has announced it will be released sometime in early 2025. It is to be assumed that the PGS1 will also be released around the same time. Preorders for the PGS1 are expected to be significant, given that the preorder count for the Seeker currently exceeds 140,000.
This new phone will be more advanced than the Sega, with a more sophisticated crypto wallet for seamless transactions.
Final thoughts
This unique new blockchain gaming option will no doubt solidify Solana's reputation as being crypto gaming innovators. Its design will definitely appeal to lovers of vintage gaming. Its portability and dedication to games will also make it a great option for those who enjoy taking breaks from their mobile phone.
