While the franchise already has a global comic book series and an original Ethereum NFT collection from 2021, the gaming community presents a much larger opportunity. Although Forgotten Runes has an animated TV series in development with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, Bearsnake still sees the game as the franchise's most important medium. The open beta will be available on Ronin, an Ethereum sidechain gaming network. A free-to-play massively MMORPG with pixel art, Forgotten Runiverse is situated in the ever-expanding Forgotten Runes universe. To engage on PvP and PvE adventures, players will form guilds and work together to gather and produce goods that can be converted into NFTs.

The game already held a closed beta, where players spent an average of over eight hours over two days. Remarkably, 76% of these players were new to the franchise. Bearsnake believes that new features in the open beta will elevate the gaming experience. These include customizing home interiors, creating custom flags for certain guilds, and the introduction of dungeons. One dungeon will be available immediately on Monday, with another coming the following week. These additions aim to deepen the lore and enrich the gameplay experience.

Introduction of the Donuts Reward System

The open beta, called "New Foundations," is launching just days after the introduction of a new reward points system known as Donuts. Bearsnake explains that Donuts will serve as a comprehensive reward system across the entire Forgotten Runes ecosystem. Players can start earning Donuts by connecting their Discord accounts, following Twitter accounts, and more. Starting Monday, players will also earn Donuts by playing the game and completing quests.

The idea of Donuts traces back to an inside joke from 2021, when a community member asked how to get on the allowlist to mint the Wizards Cult NFT. The response, "Sacrifice your soul to the jelly donut," led to the creation of Donuts as a reward system within the Forgotten Runes universe. Currently, there are 33 different types of Donuts, each with unique ways to collect them.
