First Impressions of the Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t seem drastically different from its predecessor at first glance. Its design features a slightly larger screen and a new color scheme. But is there anything else? Fans are buzzing about potential hidden features hinted at in the two-minute trailer. Here are four popular theories circulating among gamers.

Joy-Con Mouse: A New Way to Play

One of the most intriguing theories is that the Joy-Cons might double as a mouse, with some fans calling it the "Mouse-Con." This idea stems from a new hole spotted on the inside of both Joy-Cons, which seems to house a sensor. The trailer shows the Joy-Cons being used on a flat surface, similar to how a computer mouse operates. The addition of a wrist strap further fuels the comparison to a real mouse.

Fans are divided on how this feature could enhance gameplay. Some believe it will make the Switch 2 more suitable for first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. For instance, a Redditor mentioned how this could improve games like Civilization VI on the Switch. Others have raised concerns about comfort during long gaming sessions. One user has already designed a potential ergonomic case to address this.

Another theory suggests that the sensor might be for pointer functionality, reminiscent of the Wii Remote. Whether it’s a mouse or a pointer, this feature could bring new possibilities to Nintendo’s game library.

A mysterious button located below the home button has sparked plenty of speculation. Dubbed the “C” button by fans, its purpose remains unknown. Some think it could be a mini trackpad, similar to what older Blackberry phones had. This would align with the theory of the Joy-Cons functioning as a mouse.

Other guesses include a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, or even a button for casting gameplay to a TV. With no official details yet, the possibilities are wide open. For now, gamers are left to theorize about its true function.

The Switch 2 will reportedly feature an additional USB-C slot on top of the console. While not the most exciting revelation, this could indicate compatibility with new USB-C accessories or simply provide flexibility for charging the device.

IGN speculated in a video that this slot might open the door to more innovative accessories. However, it could just be a practical addition for ease of use. For now, this feature seems straightforward, but Nintendo may have surprises in store.

Mario Kart Evolutions

The trailer also teased what appears to be gameplay from a new Mario Kart title. The graphics show a noticeable improvement from the Wii U and Switch versions of Mario Kart 8, which makes sense given the game’s age—it was first released over a decade ago.

Fans have spotted details hinting at more than just a visual upgrade. Karts with triangular and sledge-style wheels suggest that wheel types may affect performance on different terrains. Additionally, some believe a new resource management mechanic, possibly involving fuel or nitro, could be introduced. This theory is based on a tank visible on Mario’s vehicle and a fuel station shown in the trailer.

Another exciting possibility is larger multiplayer races. Footage suggests that the new game might support up to 24 players per race, doubling the previous maximum of 12. If true, this would add a fresh layer of chaos to the Mario Kart experience.

The fan theories surrounding the Switch 2 are both exciting and speculative. Whether it’s the Mouse-Con, the mystery button, or changes to Mario Kart, the potential for new features has captured the imagination of gamers.

Nintendo will reveal more details about the console during a Nintendo Direct event on April 2. The full release is expected later this year. Until then, fans will continue to analyze every frame of the trailer, searching for more hidden clues.
