Ethereum Hero Shooter Expands to New Platforms
A well-known hero shooter built on Ethereum, The Machines Arena, is expanding to additional platforms. The game will be accessible on Steam, one of the biggest PC marketplaces, on January 14. The game will also debut on the PlayStation 5 system in 2025. However, these versions will have little or no blockchain functionalities because of platform restrictions. Directive Games, the studio behind the title, has adjusted its offerings to meet platform requirements while aiming to reach a broader audience.

The Machines Arena is fully optimized for blockchain integration on specific platforms. On PC via the Epic Games Store, direct download, and Android mobile devices, players experience the game’s complete crypto ecosystem. Seasonal play-to-airdrop campaigns allow players to earn TMA tokens through in-game progress. These tokens can be used to unlock features on the game’s website, adding a layer of engagement beyond standard gameplay. Furthermore, in-game skins are tradable as NFTs on the Ethereum sidechain network Ronin, enabling players to buy, sell, and trade unique assets.
The Steam version of The Machines Arena, launching soon, will not include blockchain elements. Steam has a strict policy against games with crypto or NFT features, prompting Directive Games to adapt. David Gracia, Design Manager at Directive Games, explained the reasoning behind this move.He underlined that the goal of the Steam release is to increase the number of players and make the game available to more people, irrespective of their preferred platform. The game conforms with Steam's rules by eliminating crypto components without sacrificing its essential gameplay appeal.
The PlayStation 5 Version: Still in Negotiation
The Machines Arena’s PlayStation 5 release is scheduled for 2025, but its blockchain features remain uncertain. Directive Games is in ongoing discussions with Sony to explore how crypto elements might fit within the console’s policies. Gracia suggested the possibility of retaining some blockchain features, but nothing has been finalized. This reflects the broader challenge of integrating blockchain technology into console games, where platform restrictions often limit developers’ creative freedom.
Integrating blockchain features into console games has proven to be a difficult task for developers. For instance, Moonray, another blockchain-enabled game, confirmed that its PlayStation 5 version would exclude all crypto features. Similarly, Gunzilla Games, the creator of Off the Grid, shared plans to handle blockchain elements differently on PlayStation 5 and Xbox platforms. Their approach involves aligning with platform-specific requirements while preserving some Web3 features.

Regardless of the platform they choose, The Machines Arena's capacity to unite players is one of its most notable aspects. The same lobby can be joined by players on PC, mobile, or console, and cross-platform gameplay is smooth. This inclusive approach aligns with Directive Games’ vision of creating a unified experience. Even as platform restrictions shape the game’s features, players can enjoy a consistent and connected gaming environment.
Directive Games is walking a fine line between accessibility and blockchain integration. By tailoring the game’s features to meet platform guidelines, the studio ensures that The Machines Arena reaches a diverse audience. The focus remains on delivering a high-quality experience, with or without blockchain elements. This strategy not only broadens the game’s appeal but also preserves the core aspects that make it unique. For players, this means more options and flexibility when choosing how to engage with the game.
