After an excellent year with NFT Games, Epic Games, the renowned gaming company behind the Epic Games Store, has taken a significant step towards blockchain gaming by releasing a set of guidelines for NFT games released on its game store called Blockchain Technology Guidelines.
This recently revealed a set of guidelines providing web3 game developers with a clear set of requirements to bring their NFT games into the Epic Games Store. Epic Games is home to over 1,700 games and boasts a massive user base of over 230 million and 34.3 million daily active users.
Guidelines for NFT Games
The newly published guidelines outline specific criteria that NFT games must meet to be considered for inclusion in the Epic Games Store. Available to be viewed by anyone on its website, the guidelines specifically require web3 games to be thorough in their legal components and risks of blockchain gaming information for its users.
This is palpable in its key component to compliance with blockchain technology laws and that developers are expected to disclose all conditions and risks associated with their NFT games to provide transparency to players.
Epic Games' product guidelines emphasize careful considerations for web3 games. Notably, the Epic Games Store does not permit links to any external marketplaces on its platform. This means that NFT assets included in games will not be directly accessible within the Epic Games Store. Furthermore, the guidelines state that paid offers for products are not allowed, ensuring that the store remains focused on providing a focus on “fun” aspects of blockchain gaming, rather than on earning.
Another key factor to the guidelines is that Epic Games retains the right to remove products from the store if they perceive any negative impact on the company or its players. This means the company has the right to remove any blockchain game it deems harmful to its users, ensuring a safe space for traditional gamers to play NFT games.
Commitment to Web3 Gaming
Despite the prevailing skepticism surrounding NFT games, Epic Games has demonstrated a commitment to embracing web3 gaming. At the beginning of the year, the company set a goal to add up to 20 NFT games to the Epic Games Store, further expanding its roster of available NFT games.
Notable titles like Defimons and Project Red have already made successful debuts on the platform, further solidifying Epic Games' support for the growing web3 gaming industry.
Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, has been a vocal advocate for web3 gaming and NFTs. He has expressed unwavering support, stating that the company "definitely won't ban" NFTs. Sweeney has also criticized news outlets that prematurely claimed the demise of the metaverse on Twitter, reaffirming his belief in the transformative potential of NFT gaming for crypto mass adoption.
Conclusion:
Epic Games Store has been strategically positioning itself as a leading platform for web3 gaming and NFT integration. Other massive gaming companies such as Square Enix and Nintendo have followed suit with their own strategic movements towards metaverse and NFT.
As more developers adhere to these guidelines and bring their web3 games to the Epic Games Store, players can look forward to a diverse and immersive gaming experience powered by blockchain technology.
