Midnight Society, the studio behind Deadrop, has launched an update for the game. This update is only for NFT holders. It is the first big move since co-founder and popular streamer Dr. Disrespect was dismissed from the company. He was alleged to have inappropriately chatted with a minor.
Limited Build for NFT Holders
This limited build lets players test the game by playing a team deathmatch mode. Each team embodies either a human Claw or a metallic R.A.T. (Robotic Acquisition Teams). These two characters have distinct play styles due to varying abilities and movement speeds.
R.A.T.s are quick but have low health. Claws are slower but more durable. The robotic R.A.T.s evolved from the “Synthetics” in previous Deadrop builds. The update also includes an overhauled movement system, improved gunplay and a new “adrenaline” system for Claws that grants bonuses based on in-game actions.Source: X
This update is only for owners of Founders Access Pass NFTs, which originally sold for $50 in November 2022. Players with the later $20 Tower Key passes, which are not NFTs, cannot access it.
The official blog post states that this is a “development build.” Players will experience bugs and are encouraged to provide feedback. Deadrop launched in a bare-bones format and has been expanding with guidance from early supporters.
Dr. Disrespect's Dismissal
The update comes less than a month since Dr. Disrespect (Guy Beahm) was alleged to have inappropriately chatted with a minor. Midnight Society conducted an investigation and announced it was “terminating” its relationship with Beahm. Dr. Disrespect admitted to having conversations with a minor that were “too much in the direction of being inappropriate,” though he claimed that “nothing illegal happened.”

Some gamers and industry observers thought Deadrop was “dead in the water” after Dr. Disrespect was dropped. He had a strong presence in the game’s marketing and visual style. However, many in the game’s community remained hopeful for future updates.
The blog post explains that players will be able to play as R.A.T.s or Claws in the main extraction shooter game mode in the future. This development build helps Midnight Society refine the R.A.T. vs. Claw interactions, creating two distinct play styles.
Gameplay Mechanics for R.A.T.s
R.A.T.s are powered by a battery that drains as they navigate and scavenge. They can recharge in various ways but should extract as early as possible. When dropping in, R.A.T.s get randomly assigned “loan” weapons and can only extract the in-game currency “Dust.” This makes them a lower-risk choice. Claws spawn with their own gear and can extract anything they pick up, making them high risk, high reward.
Normally, Deadrop updates roll out in “Snapshots.” The last major update came in October 2023, with Snapshot 7.5 in January. In February, Midnight Society said it plans to roll out fewer updates this year with a higher level of polish overall.
Final Thoughts
Midnight Society's new update for Deadrop shows their dedication to the game and its community. By focusing on NFT holders and refining gameplay, they aim to keep the game evolving. Despite recent controversies, the community's support and feedback will shape the game's future.
