The World Cup is one of the most anticipated sporting events. Because of its high spectator numbers, the event is a hotspot for corporate marketing. Several Chinese internet platforms will stream the sports event using VR(Virtual Reality) technology, a vital technology for enabling the metaverse.

Using 5G technology and VR, the FIFA World Cup event can be enjoyed virtually by fans in China. The push for VR is in accordance with the Chinese government’s 5-year plan on developing virtual reality technology within its own industry.

Media Platforms Take the Lead

There will only be six channels authorized by the Chinese Government. This will include Migu, the Chinese streaming service, and Douyin, or what’s known as Tiktok in the west. These companies will spearhead VR coverage of the event, allowing for a shared viewing experience for viewers.

The companies will be given exclusive license rights to provide air live coverage of the FIFA Qatar World Cup. Moreover, the event will be a perfect opportunity to apply the new metaverse technologies implemented by China.

Metaverse in China

The World Cup serves as a major stepping stone in the country’s push towards VR and metaverse technologies. On November 1, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and four government agencies in China revealed a 5-year plan to enhance the development of the local VR industry.

Aiming to achieve it by 2026, the plan pursues major breakthroughs in metaverse technologies, solidifying the country into a major VR technology producer. The World Cup will serve as a major testing ground to see if Chinese technologies are up to the metaverse task.

Metaverse is practically synonymous with Virtual Reality technology. Several major projects attempt to shape their versions of the concept of the metaverse. They are commonly implemented through GameFi such as The Sandbox. You can learn more about which blockchain games pursue a metaverse experience at  https://chainplay.gg/genre/metaverse/.
