Ubisoft's First NFT Game: Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles

With Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, Ubisoft, a company well-known for popular brands like Assassin's Creed and Just Dance, has made an appearance in the NFT game market. The Oasys blockchain gaming network is the launchpad for their first original NFT game. In this tactical, turn-based strategy game, users select teams of champions with a fantasy theme and engage in online combat with other players.

Champions Tactics is accessible on the Ubisoft Connect network as a free PC game. Players can compete in restricted ranked and unranked matches using "ethereal champions," who are non-NFT characters. You can unlock these characters by finishing in-game quests. However, Ubisoft has also made 75,000 NFT champions available on the Oasys network for anyone who chooses to get more involved. There are secondary markets where some of these NFTs can be bought.

NFT champions come with specific visual qualities and combat attributes. Players can purchase these champions for under $10 worth of OAS and use them without limits in ranked matches. They also offer additional rewards that players won’t get with free champions. Another unique feature is the ability to forge new champions by merging two existing NFTs. This adds a layer of customization and strategy for NFT holders.

The Warlords collection of Ethereum-based profile photos (PFPs) was made available by Ubisoft in 2023. These offer holders additional advantages in the game and are modeled around Champions Tactics. Players who wish to improve their game experience using NFT assets now have more options thanks to the Warlords NFTs' current secondary market pricing of about $85 worth of ETH.

Ubisoft’s Blockchain Journey

For a number of years, Ubisoft has been investigating blockchain technology. Prior to Champions Tactics, the business worked with a number of Web3 firms and published a number of smaller blockchain initiatives. In 2021, Ubisoft used the Tezos network to incorporate in-game NFTs into the PC edition of Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

For Ubisoft, Champions Tactics is just the beginning. Their upcoming project, Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., has already been revealed. It will be based on the same-titled Netflix series. The game will feature characters from popular series like Rayman and Far Cry. Based on the Ethereum layer-2 network Arbitrum, the game's 10,000 NFTs will soon be available through the Magic Eden marketplace.
