Atari has disclosed intentions to bring back the ancient Atari 7800+ game machine from 1986. The upgraded version aims to revive the nostalgic appeal of the original system for a new generation of gamers. It was developed in partnership with game publisher PLAION. It's important to keep in mind that this improved console is currently unrelated to any of Atari's cryptocurrency initiatives.
Modern Features and Pre-Order Details of Atari
The Atari 7800+ is designed to be compatible with modern televisions, offering a compact and updated version of the classic console. Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest is a new game that is included with every unit. It is a successor to the popular Crystal Castles and comes with a CX78+ wireless gamepad. The console will launch globally this winter and is now available for pre-order at $129.99.

In certain aspects, the Atari 7800+ is the same as the Atari 2600+ from the previous year. Both systems support 16:9 widescreen monitors and can run games from the original 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Nevertheless, the Atari 7800+ has a new look and comes with a wireless controller in place of a joystick.
New Controllers and Game Cartridges
Atari and PLAION are releasing the CX78+ wireless gamepad and the CX40+ wireless joystick in addition to the Atari 7800+. Each controller costs $34.99 and works with original Atari hardware as well as the new 7800+ and 2600+ consoles.

Additionally, Atari is introducing 10 new game cartridges with the new hardware. These include Asteroids Deluxe, Berzerk, and the Epyx Games Collection, which features Summer Games, Winter Games, and California Games. Each cartridge is priced at $30 and works with both the 7800+ and 2600+, as well as the original Atari 7800.
Unlike the Atari 2600+, the Atari 7800+ does not include any crypto integrations. Although Atari has been active in the crypto space, recently launching classic games like Asteroids and Breakout on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the 7800+ will not be linked to these initiatives. Atari previously introduced its own crypto token, digital collectibles, and exclusive merchandise for token holders.
Potential Future Crypto Integration
After the publication of this article, an Atari representative confirmed to Decrypt's GG that the 7800+ hardware is not connected to any Web3 components at this time. However, there is a possibility that the Atari Club, which requires NFT ownership for membership, could involve the community in brainstorming new game ideas and potential collaborations with crypto partners in the future. At this stage, any such integration is speculative and has not been confirmed.
