Virtua Fighter Takes on the Metaverse with OASYX's New NFT Collection

SEGA's iconic Virtua Fighter franchise is making its way to the metaverse with the announcement of a new NFT collection in collaboration with OASYX.

The project will be spearheaded by Yu Suzuki, the creator of Virtua Fighter, who will be overseeing the release of 1,000 digital collectibles based on the game's fighting characters from all its first three titles - Virtua Fighter 1, 2, and 3.

This Virtua Fighter franchise is a beloved fighting game for many gamers. It was recognized as the first 3D fighting game released in the 90s. The soon-to-be-released NFTs will both serve as a digital collectible and more importantly, the foundation for the game's future Metaverse avatars. No details have yet been released on this upcoming game title, but fans are excited to see what's in store for the iconic franchise.

OASYX's inaugural series of NFTs will feature 11 characters from Virtua Fighter and will be part of a larger collection of 10,000 minted pieces. The NFTs are expected to be highly sought after by fans of the franchise and people who grew up playing the game back in the 90s.

Moving forward, SEGA will retain ownership of the IP for the digital collections, but Suzuki will determine how the project will continue to evolve. This means the prospect of a Virtua Fighter NFT game in the hands of Suzuki, its design, gameplay, direction, etc. 

In a statement, Suzuki said,  “I am delighted to combine innovative technology in the form of blockchain-based NFTs, with three titles from the Virtua Fighter series to create new entertainment for a wide range of gaming fans.

Final Thoughts

The collection is now live and users can purchase on by voting on their website and connecting their wallets. It’s exciting to see how this project will develop, especially with how the long-time fans of the franchise will support the project in its next move.
