CCP Games, the Iceland-based gaming developer behind the popular MMO game EVE Online, has just received a whopping $40 million in funding from investment giant Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z.

The additional funding will be used to develop a massive online multiplayer game incorporating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that are set within the same universe as EVE Online.

EVE Online

CCP Games is well-versed in developing MMORPGs due to their experience with EVE Online. The MMORPG genre is a widely-popular genre in the web3 gaming industry. Big Time, a space NFT RPG game, became the game of the year from Polkastarter’s Gam3 awards.

Additionally, Polygon-based Oath of Peak MMORPG garnered significant attention from gamers even before its official release. The game reached over 300,000 pre-registered players.

The use of NFTs in gaming has been seen as a way to create more meaningful and valuable in-game items, while also providing players with a way to truly own and control their digital assets. In NFT games, its mostly seen as a method to enhance the gaming experience rather than primarily as a means for monetary gain.

Last year, a16z announced a $600 million fund for future gaming growth. Despite not being a crypto-specific firm, it has become one of the largest names in the space due to its significant investments in the crypto industry. This latest funding round with CCP Games is yet another sign of the firm's commitment to the intersection of gaming and blockchain technology.

Final Thoughts

This latest development is sure to bring fans waiting for its latest contribution to the web3 genre. CCP was in the game as early as 1997, so we can expect a game with a long history of innovation and dedication to the craft. With the significant investment from a16z, CCP Games will undoubtedly create a new benchmark in the gaming industry with its NFT-powered MMO.
