MechaFightClub, the popular mech-based rooster NFT game on the Solana blockchain, has taken to Twitter to announce its entry into “indefinite hibernation.”

What’s MechaFightClub?

Known for its unique collection of rooster-based mecha bots and engaging battles, the game had gained a strong following, particularly in Asia. Last year, the studio behind MechaFightClub, Irreverent Labs, received a significant $40 million funding round, featuring investors like Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Solana Ventures, and Infinity Ventures.

This funding injection helped establish the game as a reputable player in the NFT space and possibly boosted its player base for its perceived bright future due to the massive fun. However, controversy arose around this time due to its cockfighting theme, which drew criticism from netizens who expressed concerns about the real-life sport’s cruelty.

Nevertheless, this didn’t stop users who were interested in the game. Combined with its fun earning ability, the game kept users engaged with its variety of rooster mechs ranging from different abilities, mechs, and rarities.

Where did MechaFightClub go?

In the official announcement, the studio cited the “drastically changed” regulatory and operational environment surrounding blockchain in the United States as the primary reason for their decision.

The studio explicitly cites blockchain companies’ increasingly complex situation due to the U.S.’s regulatory uncertainty causing a problematic limbo in the policy.

Despite MechaFightClub’s hibernation, the brand will persist as part of the studio’s identity. As a silver lining, the game has launched SOL 4 Cocks, a repurchase program for any MechaFightClub NFTs from the Genesis mint. Users will have the opportunity to sell their mechbots back to the studio for 18 $SOL.

While MechaFightClub’s sudden pause in operations may disappoint its loyal fanbase, the decision reflects the evolving regulatory landscape surrounding blockchain in the United States. As the game takes a step back, the industry will continue to navigate the challenges posed by regulatory uncertainties, seeking new avenues to innovate and thrive in the ever-evolving NFT space.
