Unknown Worlds has been hard at work since Subnautica 2 launched to make sure we keep enjoying the open-world survival game. In three weeks since the early access of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds has launched three hotfix updates. And this may be the most important update yet.

The Subnautica 2 hotfix 3 adjusts the behavior of creatures to make underwater survival feel less chaotic. While the game is now less chaotic, you’ll still have to deal with the fact that you still cannot kill the alien fish.

Staying true to its roots, the developers have added “threat mitigation” techniques. The latest updates introduce smart, mechanical tweaks to how predators hunt, see, and attack players. While these updates will level the playing field for you, it’s still not an action game and you cannot kill the fish!

Balancing the Ocean Predators

If you get over the fact that you’re still not allowed to kill the alien fish, there are some major changes in Hotfix 3. The most notable ones are from three specific threats: Hammerheads, Marrowbreaches, and Nibblers.

Each creature received distinct behavior modifications to reduce frustration while maintaining tension.

  • Hammerheads: These massive predators will no longer attack unpiloted Tadpole submersibles. They can still show a curious interest in your vehicles, but they won’t aggressively destroy them when left empty.

Additionally, the developers fixed an issue where Hammerheads would occasionally ignore flares, meaning players can now reliably use flares to distract them.

  • Marrowbreaches: Unknown Worlds took a unique risk-reward approach with this creature. The overall damage of a Marrowbreach attack has actually been increased. However, to keep encounters fair, their attacks are now spaced much further apart, preventing players from being quickly overwhelmed.
  • Nibblers: These pesky creatures received a massive overhaul to make them less annoying. Their visual perception range has been reduced, meaning you can swim closer to them before they spot you.

When they do notice you, Nibblers will now circle you for a longer duration before striking. Their overall swimming movement speed has been lowered, and they are now highly sensitive to your Multitool. This means striking them with a tool will actively flinch them and drive them away. To balance these heavy nerfs, their raw damage was slightly increased.

Key Performance and Technical Fixes

Beyond the deep ocean life, Subautica 2 Hotfix 3 addresses several glaring technical bugs that plagued the Early Access launch. Graphics performance receives a major boost with an upgrade to NVIDIA DLSS version 4.5.

Unknown Worlds successfully patched severe issues that caused DLSS to crash the game or fail to save graphic settings properly. Furthermore, Frame Generation is now fully available across all versions of the game. Base builders also have a huge reason to celebrate.

The resource cost to craft Interior Walls has been slashed to just one-quarter of their original price, making early-game habitat expansion much easier. Multiplayer stability saw improvements as well. A common bug where joining clients would randomly revert to their previous physical positions upon reconnecting has been completely resolved.

The team also patched a game-breaking issue where Strike Armor modification buffs would stack additively, which previously caused severe balancing glitches. Finally, a visual bug that kept player goggles visible in first-person mode while riding as a passenger in the Tadpole Haul Chassis has been cleared up.

Unprecedented Success for Subnautica 2

The release of Hotfix 3 comes at a time of massive commercial success for Subnautica 2. Design lead Anthony Gallegos recently revealed that the game has already shattered records, selling over 4 million copies within its first few weeks. The title also achieved a staggering peak of over 467,500 concurrent players on Steam

SteamDB charts interface for Subnautica 2 showing data from late May to early June. It displays 24,734 current players, a 42,103 24-hour peak, and a 467,582 all-time peak achieved 19 days prior, accompanied by a wavy line chart tracking player counts.

Gallegos clarified that the team never intended to make a strict “pacifism game.” Instead, they want players to rely on wit, tools, and evasion rather than lethal violence. Despite this approach, the game has a 91% rating on 109,000+ reviews.

This incredible sales boom has reportedly triggered a massive $250 million earnout bonus from publisher Krafton to the development team, signaling a highly profitable future for the franchise.
