Interestingly, the source of May the 4th Be With You is not from a Lucasfilm script but from British politics. The day Margaret Thatcher became the UK Prime Minister, on May 4, 1979 her party had placed an ad in the London Evening News, which ran as follows, “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Although the pun recurs every now and then throughout the 80s and 90s, it was not until the turn of the social media age that the date would actually solidify into a holiday. In 2011, the first organized celebration was held in Toronto at the Underground Cinema.
With the sheer size of the giant grassroots movement, Lucasfilm and Disney officially adopted the holiday in 2013, turning it into a day to make major announcements, host fan events, and, most importantly to gamers, go to the store and make massive sales.
May 4th is not only about shopping but also about fans. It’s a day for community. It is a period when the values of the franchise, hope, courage, and fighting against tyranny, are honored by cosplay, movie marathons, and charity events.
It has since spawned a sort of sequel holiday on May 5th, the so-called Revenge of the Fifth (a play on Revenge of the Sith), during which fans celebrate the darker side of the Force and the iconic villains of the franchise.
