The remake preserves the iconic space combat on rails of the original Nintendo 64 game. The player plays as Fox McCloud, leader of the Star Fox team. He fights to prevent evil Andross from winning control of the Lylat System. Old friends like Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare have new character models and new voice work.

- Online multiplayer battles
- 4v4 dogfight modes
- GameChat integration
- Local co-op gameplay
- Shared Joy-Con cooperative controls
- Expanded Challenge Mode missions
- New cutscenes and story interactions
Multiplayer battles will have varying objectives on each map, according to Nintendo. Large scale dog fights can involve team combat, cargo picking or zone control.
One of the most interesting features is the inclusion of Star Fox characters in the online GameChat sessions, complete with visuals. These digital character overlays are said to replicate players’ facial expressions and movements as they play in real time.
