With Star Fox, Nintendo is not recreating everything about Star Fox 64. While it retains the core of Star Fox 64, Star Fox is a modern remake. The trailer shows that the game features fresh visual effects, gameplay mechanics and multiplayer enhancements.

The remake introduces high-fidelity visual effects and expanded 4v4 dogfight modes.

The remake preserves the iconic space combat on rails of the original Nintendo 64 game. The player plays as Fox McCloud, leader of the Star Fox team. He fights to prevent evil Andross from winning control of the Lylat System. Old friends like Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare have new character models and new voice work.

Utilizing the power of the Switch 2, the game features realistic "mouse-like" precision controls via the new Joy-Cons.

Barrel rolls, boosting, braking, and branching mission paths remain the same. But the trailer shows they’re more detailed and cinematic than the other Star Fox games. Nintendo is striking the perfect balance between the old game and new improvements.

New Star Fox Features To Expect

Some of the most exciting features of the announcements include a host of new gameplay systems catering to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. The remake adds mouse-like controls with the Switch 2 Joy-Cons for added accuracy when flying in battle.

Players can expect classic maneuvers like barrel rolls and boosting to feel more responsive than ever in these visually detailed environments.

For those seeking a classic Nintendo 64 controller, Nintendo confirmed it will support that old joystick as well. Other features to be included in the game are:

  • Online multiplayer battles
  • 4v4 dogfight modes
  • GameChat integration
  • Local co-op gameplay
  • Shared Joy-Con cooperative controls
  • Expanded Challenge Mode missions
  • New cutscenes and story interactions

Multiplayer battles will have varying objectives on each map, according to Nintendo. Large scale dog fights can involve team combat, cargo picking or zone control.

One of the most interesting features is the inclusion of Star Fox characters in the online GameChat sessions, complete with visuals. These digital character overlays are said to replicate players’ facial expressions and movements as they play in real time.

Will Star Fox Become a Major Nintendo Franchise Again?

Star Fox is a very popular title. But it no longer has the same level of success like Mario, Zelda and Pokémon. You can trace its decline to long gaps between releases and inconsistencies.

With what we’ve seen, Nintendo seems to be finally giving Star Fox a second chance to fly. The trailer is already a very promising sign for fans of the franchise. It shows that Nintendo is taking a more serious approach to the game than just a remaster.
