If you’ve started Saros, you’ve surely found out that surviving on the hostile planet of Carcosa is no small feat. Every shadow hides a threat, and every mechanic is designed to push your reflexes to their limit. While the tutorials provide a baseline, truly mastering the loop requires a deeper understanding of the game’s hidden nuances.

Whether you are struggling with the relentless enemy waves or just wanting to start with an edge, these essential tips and tricks will help you turn the tide in your favor.

1. Master the Perfect Reload

Speed is your greatest ally in Saros. Much like the active reload systems in other high-octane shooters, Saros features a Perfect Reload mechanic. When your magazine is empty, a window appears; timing your reload (using R3 or R2) instantly refills your ammo.

To maximize efficiency, get into the habit of using R3 to reload. This allows you to keep your finger on the trigger (R2) so you can resume firing the millisecond the reload is successful.

2. Understand Alt-Fire Variations

The equipment menu allows players to inspect weapon traits and unique Alt-Fire capabilities like "Split Smart Rounds."

Every weapon in Saros comes equipped with a unique Alt-Fire mode, activated by holding L2 halfway. These aren’t just secondary attacks; they are tactical tools.

For instance, the Horde Shotgun’s Alt-Fire changes its spread to a vertical orientation, perfect for hitting narrow or flying targets. Learning the specific utility of each weapon’s Alt-Fire can make the difference when facing elite hostiles.

3. Don’t Grab Every Artifact

You may be tempted to pick up every Artifact you find. Don’t fall for that temptation. While they provide stacking bonuses, your slots are finite. Some Artifacts come with trade-offs that might lower essential stats.

Prioritize Artifacts that offer health boosts or healing upon kills. If you find your slots full, you can use the Acolyte’s Wager to reroll rewards or clear space.

4. Match Guns to Your Primary Stats

Your character build revolves around three stats: Resilience, Command, and Drive. Every weapon has randomly generated traits (like weakpoint damage or recoil compensation) associated with these stats.

Equipping a weapon whose traits match your highest stats will significantly boost its combat efficiency. The only exception is if a new weapon has a Proficiency level five points higher than your current one. At that point, the raw damage output outweighs the stat synergy.

5. Prioritize the Second Chance Skill

One of the most vital upgrades, according to reviewers in the Armor Matrix (your skill tree), is Second Chance. This permanent upgrade allows you to revive once per run with full Integrity. If you use it, you must complete a Nightmare Strand. It is a high-difficulty combat arena that replenishes the charge for that run.

6. Dodge Over Shielding When You’re Not Sure

While your Shield is excellent for absorbing blue projectiles and gaining power, it relies heavily on timing. If you aren’t 100% confident in the block, Dodge.

Dodging ensures you take zero damage and helps maintain your Adrenaline meter. Hiding behind environmental cover like pillars is also a valid strategy to catch your breath during a chaotic swarm.

7. Cleanse Corruption with Power

During an Eclipse, you will encounter yellow Corrupted Projectiles. Touching these reduces your maximum health (Integrity). To reclaim your health bar, you must fire your Power Weapon.

This creates a strategic loop. You must engage aggressively to build the meter required to cleanse the very damage you’re trying to avoid.

8. Use Carcosan Modifiers

Once you defeat the second boss, you unlock Carcosan Modifiers. These allow you to customize the game’s difficulty. You can balance Trial mods (which hinder you, like reducing currency retention) with Protection mods (which buff you, like making your Shield consume no power).

Using the tips outlined here will help you tailor your Saros experience to your specific playstyle. By mastering the Perfect Reload, managing your Corruption, and picking the right stats, you’ll find that the overwhelming world of Carcosa becomes a playground for your tactical prowess.
