If you have been waiting for the next great sci-fi shooter game, then Saros might already be on your list. Saros, made by Housemarque, is on PlayStation 5 only and could be the most ambitious action game of 2026.
Saros has a spooky setting, changing gameplay, and combines combat with a deep story. This has earned it praise in its early testing. With people getting excited before its April launch, let’s look at what we know so far.
When Will Saros Launch?

Saros was originally set to release on March 20, 2026, as a PS5 exclusive. It was delayed a little to give the developers more time to make it better. The new release date has been confirmed. Saros will now release on April 30.
Housemarque shared a trailer to give us a first look at what to expect from the Saros game. The trailer showed a world with alien landscapes, intense combat, and a mysterious story.

The Saros Story: A Lost Colony and a Relentless Mission

The story of Saros centers around a haunting narrative set on the planet Carcosa. You play as Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer. Arjun is sent to look into a colony but things get weird.
The planet is stuck in an eclipse and reality is not stable. The story is told through the environment, holograms, audio logs, and character talks from perspectives. Unlike Returnal, which had a simple story the Saros game seems to have a more structured story with characters.
Platforms and Technical Features
At launch, Saros will be available only on PS5. It is enhanced for PS5 Pro using Housemarques’ expertise in action games. Expect smooth 60fps combat with lighting on Carcosa, like Returnal’s graphics. While PC is not confirmed, the game engine might work on PC later.
Gameplay: Roguelike Evolution with a Twist

Gameplay is where Saros truly stands out. At its core, it’s a third-person action shooter with roguelike elements, but Housemarque is clearly evolving the formula.
- Persistent Progression
Saros introduces permanent progression systems. Each run contributes to long-term upgrades. You can keep upgrading your character even after you die which makes the game less frustrating and still exciting.
- Dynamic, Ever-Changing Worlds
The world of Saros changes every time you die. It’s not completely random. It’s a mix of levels and dynamic changes. This makes the game feel familiar but still surprising.
- The Soltari Shield System
One of the standout mechanics is the Soltari Shield, which allows players to absorb incoming enemy projectiles. It can also convert that energy into powerful counterattacks. This adds a strategic layer to combat, rewarding timing and positioning over pure aggression.
- Shorter, More Accessible Runs
Saros gameplay loops at about 30 minutes per run. It makes the gameplay more accessible than Returnal.
- Risk vs Reward Mechanics
There is a teleportation system that can help players skip previously completed areas. You’ll have to sacrifice loot and upgrades, though. This introduces meaningful decision-making. You can decide to play it safe and progress faster or explore thoroughly for better rewards.

What Makes Saros Different from Returnal?
While Saros is often described as a spiritual successor to Returnal, it introduces several key improvements:
- More accessible onboarding and smoother learning curve
- Persistent upgrades that reward every run
- A stronger focus on narrative and character development
- Shorter, more digestible gameplay sessions
In short, it feels like Housemarque listened closely to player feedback and refined the formula.
Final Thoughts
The Saros game is going to be one of the most exciting PS5 games of 2026. With its combination of combat, changing worlds, and deep story it could be a defining game for roguelike games. If Housemarque can balance the game to be fun and challenging, Saros might be even better than Returnal.
