Sony is quietly preparing one of its biggest technological leaps yet. The gaming giant, most popular for its PlayStation consoles, could be powering its hardware by artificial intelligence.

In a recent interview, PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that AI-powered frame generation is coming to future PlayStation hardware. While he doesn’t expect the new AI-powered PlayStation to be ready soon, the implications could be immense.

What Is AI Frame Generation?

AI frame generation is a method of introducing additional video frames that are not generated by a game itself. It applies machine learning to create new frames between the actual ones. The AI creates the missing frames instead of depending on a stronger hardware.

The advantage is less stuttering and increased frame rate, and players see an improvement in performance without such massive hardware upgrades. It is similar to solutions that are available to PCs, including NVIDIA DLSS and AMD frame generation. A game stuck at 30 frames per second would feel like 60 FPS or higher.

Rather than simply adopting an existing solution, Sony is co-developing the technology alongside AMD as part of its broader hardware strategy. This partnership is already visible in the current PlayStation PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) tech introduced on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

The PSSR is an AI upscaling system designed to improve image quality and performance. That same foundation is now evolving into something more advanced—frame generation powered by machine learning.

When Will It Arrive?

The new feature of PlayStation is still in development. Gamers will have to spend a little more time to wait for it. Cerny has clarified that it will not come in 2026. The majority of reports point to it not being fully implemented until 2027 or later.

He didn’t mention if the tech will be released with the current PlayStation 5 Pro or the next generation of consoles. Under the normal seven-year cycle, PlayStation 6 would be released in 2027-2028. No one is sure, yet it is likely that this technology will be an integral component of the next-gen hardware produced by Sony.

A specialized AI hardware may improve gaming performance and what can be created by developers. Consider massive expansive worlds with constant and high frame rates, with a level of light and detail previously unattainable on consoles.

The Bottom Line

AI Frame generation can be called a tech buzzword, yet it could become one of the greatest inventions in gaming. It will not come overnight, but the trend is quite apparent: games will be smarter and more efficient to render. That is where Sony appears to be heading with its next generation of consoles.
