Developer 4A Games has announced that players will get a first look at Metro 2039 at a special Xbox First Look event on April 16. The event will be broadcasted worldwide in 25 languages. It will provide fans with their initial actual look into the next installment of the franchise.

Interestingly, this isn’t just another multi-game showcase. Microsoft is even putting Metro 2039 in the limelight of its own—something that demonstrates how crucial this release might be. You can watch the Metro 2039 World Premiere on the official Xbox YouTube and Twitch.

Very little has been confirmed so far. However, we know that Metro 2039 is a mainline sequel. But leaks suggest that it could embrace the open-world design with a more expansive world than Metro Exodus.

Even though 4A Games has maintained a relatively sealed lip on any actual plot details, recent spillage by Windows Report and industry sources indicates one is about to witness an intriguing twist to the storyline.

  • A Voiced Protagonist: It is rumored that Metro 2039 is no longer going to use the silent protagonist technique. After the acclaimed voiced DLC characters of Exodus, the sequel in the mainline could have our protagonist play a more active role in the story.
  • Possible Expansion: Exodus ventured far into the untamed wilderness of Russia. Leaks suggest Metro 2039 will be going back to a more connected world.
  • The Timeline: The game is set in the year 2039, several years after Exodus. This space gives room for changes in the political situation of the wasteland and development of the Dark Ones or other mutated threats.

Next-Gen Tech: Pushing the Limits of Realism

4A Games has a reputation for being technical pioneers. If the developer continues on that trend, Metro 2039 could set a new visual benchmark. The game is developed specifically for Gen 9 consoles (Xbox Series X|S, PS5) and PC.

The leaks suggest Metro 2039 will feature an enhanced global illumination system. Leaks suggest up to 120GB of “scrapped content,” close to the 150GB open-world masterpiece, Crimson Desert.

What to Expect from the Gameplay

Assuming that the leaks are correct, Metro 2039 will emphasize once again the element of survival in the genre of survival horror. There will be more customization of weapons, a more sophisticated morality system where there are more than just “kill” or “don’t kill decisions and a sophisticated crafting system.

The possibility that it is a teaser to a Ukrainian folk dance called Hopak, per speculations. It implies that the narrative may travel to other regions beyond Moscow’s surroundings.
