If you’ve been struggling with Marathon’s economy, congratulations, you just got a big boost. Bungie’s latest Marathon update for its extraction shooter includes a free weekly cryo archive kit. The decision is part of Bungie’s move to make the high-stakes Cryo Archive endgame more accessible.

If you’re not familiar with the world of Marathon, the Cryo Archive is a premier weekend-only endgame zone. It represents the pinnacle of the game’s PvPvE experience. However, it’s not a free event.
Unlike standard runs, players cannot enter the Cryo Archive unless their current loadout is valued at 5,000 credits or higher. In a game where gear fear is real and a single failed extraction means losing everything, maintaining a 5,000-credit loadout is a daunting task for casual runners.
This high barrier often makes the Cryo Archive difficult to achieve by deterring the broader community. As a result, only the most elite Marathon players were in the endgame zone.
Former Counter-Strike pro Shroud recently commented on the map’s complexity, praising the Cryo Archive as the most elaborate extraction shooter map ever seen while simultaneously questioning if it was too much of a grind for the average player. Bungie is giving a free kit weekly to make the Cryo Archive more accessible.

What’s in the Free Sponsored Kit?

Every Marathon player will get a Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit once per week. This kit provides players with a baseline Blue-tier loadout. It includes weapons and essential consumables like healing items.
Crucially, this kit satisfies the 5,000-credit requirement, allowing players to jump into the Cryo Archive without risking their own hard-earned vault assets. This free kit will serve as a free ticket to the game’s most exclusive and elaborate map.
Every Marathon player now has a weekly shot at the high-tier loot found within the Archive’s frozen halls. The community’s push for this change was amplified by high-profile players.
What the Marathon Update 1.0.6.2 Brings Beyond the Kits

While the free kits are the headline, the 1.0.6.2 update brought several other significant balance changes:
- WSTR Combat Shotgun Buff: After a recent nerf left the community cold, the WSTR has received a damage boost from 78 to 85. While its critical multiplier was lowered (1.15x to 1.05x), it now boasts a massive 75% damage bonus against AI targets, making it a PvE powerhouse.
- Rook Improvements: A bug was fixed that prevented Rooks (solo scavenger runners) from spawning with the standard six depleted Shield Charges and Health Kits.
- UI and Quality of Life: Several UI bugs were squash to streamline the inventory and matchmaking experience.
How to Claim Your Free Kit
Players can find their free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit in the Armory → Special Offers section of the menu. Note that the kit is usually only available for claim during Cryo Weekends when the map is active.
Bungie continues to iterate on Marathon as it nears its full launch potential, proving that they are listening to player feedback regarding the game’s notorious difficulty. Whether you’re a veteran or a new Runner, this weekly freebie is the perfect excuse to brave the Archive.
