Ethereum Foundation Restructures Leadership to Enhance Focus and Execution

The Ethereum Foundation, which supports the Ethereum blockchain, has restructured its leadership to clearly separate the duties of its management team and board of directors. The board will now serve as a “security council,” safeguarding the foundation’s core values and setting the long-term vision for Ethereum, while the new management team will focus on executing these strategies operationally.

Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak have been appointed as co-executive directors, with their roles taking effect on April 28. Wang, a seasoned Ethereum researcher, and Stańczak, founder of Nethermind, will drive the foundation’s priorities around censorship resistance, open-source innovation, privacy, and security. Stańczak’s term is set for two years, during which he will balance his new responsibilities with ongoing roles at Nethermind and an upcoming Ethereum-focused venture capital firm.

The management team also includes Bastian Aue, who will oversee organizational strategy and talent, and Josh Stark, who will lead project execution and communications. The board comprises Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, President Aya Miyaguchi, Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger, and Wang, who will act as a liaison between the board and management.

Addressing Criticism and Scaling Challenges

This leadership overhaul comes as the Ethereum Foundation faces criticism for its perceived lack of engagement with decentralized finance innovation and Ethereum’s price performance lagging behind competitors like Bitcoin and Solana. The foundation has been called out by figures such as Synthetix founder Kain Warwick for not sufficiently supporting DeFi development.

In response, the Foundation has outlined three main focus areas for the next 12 months: scaling Ethereum’s layer 1, expanding layer 2 “blobs,” and improving user experience. Ethereum researchers Dankrad Feist and Sophia Gold have proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) 9678 and 9698, which aim to raise the gas limit and thereby increase transaction throughput on the network.

Strengthening Ethereum’s Future Through Clear Roles and Vision

Vitalik Buterin will continue providing technical and intellectual guidance, while Aya Miyaguchi manages the foundation’s vision and external relationships. Patrick Storchenegger remains responsible for legal and compliance matters. The board, acting as a guardian of Ethereum’s core principles, selected the new executive directors and retains the authority to oversee their tenure.

This renewed leadership structure is designed to improve operational execution, enhance communication with the Ethereum ecosystem, and reinforce the foundation’s commitment to decentralization, privacy, and open-source innovation, positioning Ethereum for sustainable growth and innovation.
