Just like every other sector, the gaming industry has been rapidly embracing the use of artificial intelligence (AI). However, Square Enix has never been a studio that has been afraid to experiment. The most recent announcement of the studio sounds more like the plot of a Hollywood sci-fi movie than a viable game innovation.
During a press conference over the weekend, Square Enix announced that it had partnered with Google to introduce Gemini into Dragon Quest X. The game will have AI-controlled slime companions, which will also serve as chatbots. The slime will guide the player around the world of Dragon Quest X.
The core of this new feature is Chatty Slimey. It is an artificial intelligence chatbot that is based on Google Gemini. It features real-time chat with players to provide guidance and respond to the action in the game. On paper it is cute; in fact, it is already generating curiosity and excitement, but with some skepticism.
A Slime That Actually Talks Back

Dragon Quest X King Slime Boss Battle
You know, slimes are cute and simple and the first enemy you often meet in case you have ever played a Dragon Quest game. Now imagine one of them acting as your personal in-game companion. This is precisely what Square Enix is doing.
The game will have an interface that allows players to chat with the slime, which replies with AI generated dialogue and voice. The voice generation implies that the slime will really talk and not just text back. However, the AI does not just answer questions.
It will also analyze on‑screen events. The slime may talk, give suggestions, or praise you in the event that you kill a difficult opponent or discover a valuable object. That is, it is not merely reactive but contextual.

Why Square Enix Is Doing This
The objective, as the developers explain, is to make the game seem less lonely. Dragon Quest X is an old MMORPG, and it might seem overwhelming, particularly to the newcomers.
Chatty Slimey is designed to be like a friend in charge, helping the player to solve things as well as keeping them company. It is a minor modification of the surface, but it is part of a bigger trend in gaming.
Artificial intelligence companions are not only becoming prevalent in the background. Square Enix has talked publicly of its wider AI interests. The studio will approach AI implementation in development and game systems with aggression, with the goal of enabling AI to perform at least 70 percent of QA and debugging by 2027.

What Is the Reception to this Idea by Players?
As is common with most AI aspects in games, responses have not been entirely positive. There are players who are eager to have a companion who can lead them, and there are those who do not need it and may even be displeased.
There is also the issue of the behavior of AI chatbots in open-ended settings. It has been demonstrated with past experiments that AI characters can be uncontrollable or manipulated easily. The greater question is, will it make the game better?
To others, what is so captivating about RPGs is the well-considered characterizations and human-like dialogues. A substitution of that with AI-produced answers can seem like a move that does not contribute to the charm of Dragon Quest X that players love.
