There’s a massive wave of layoffs now sweeping across the gaming space. Epic Games has laid off more than 1,000 employees. But it just confirmed that the highly anticipated collaboration of Disney and Fortnite is on course.
The announcement has gained much coverage due to the recent headlines surrounding Epic Games. The Fortnite producer has declared a significant wave of layoffs in March 2026 as part of a larger initiative to restructure its finances following an apparent decline in player interest, which started in 2025.
However, as troubling as that news might have been to the direction of the company, it has not thrown its biggest long-term bets away. It is confirmed that the building of a Disney-powered universe within Fortnite is still in play.

In order to comprehend the magnitude of this partnership, you must know why it initially began. In February 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion into Epic Games. The aim? To help create a persistent, interconnected universe that blends gaming, storytelling, and digital experiences.
The investment and partnership was meant to go beyond a couple of skins and limited-time events. Disney has a huge library (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, classic animated franchises) that will become a part of a common digital ecosystem inside Fortnite as a part of the partnership.
Within this universe, players of Fortnite will have the opportunity to interact, travel, and even go shopping. Despite the layoffs, it has been reported that this partnership is still full steam ahead. At least that is an indicator of both parties’ confidence in the project.

Building the Next Major Universe

The vision of the collaboration is to build a digital environment where the Disney characters and narratives coexist with the gameplay systems of Fortnite. Epic Games president Adam Sussman told TheWrap that the vision has not shifted and they are thrilled with the present progress.
Sussman further adds that they are determined to develop a games and entertainment universe with Disney. Previous crossovers with Star Wars and Marvel characters have already taken place in Fortnite, and the next one may be even larger.
The upcoming Disney/Fortnite crossover, according to early reports, will feature characters in Disney’s animated 1997 classic, Hercules, appearing in-game. But expect more to come.
Josh D’Amaro, the Disney CEO, has indicated that there are potential Disney films that could finally be released in Fortnite. D’Amoro said last month that it might be a new movie that is debuting in Fortnite or a place where you choose to reserve your next cruise vacation. He also suggests that you might be involved in the Super Bowl somehow in the Fortnite world.
Final Thoughts
Epic is trimming down in order to stay sustainable, but it’s not abandoning its biggest bets. And right now, few bets are bigger than the Disney-Fortnite collaboration. The success of this project could redefine not just Fortnite but how the gaming industry itself is experienced.
