Cyclops was confirmed as the 51st hero joining the Marvel Rivals roster during the Season 8 trailer where Scott Summers was captured and imprisoned at Alchemax HQ. He used his Concussive Optic Blasts to fight back before being taken down. That trailer was the first real look at what he can do and most people walked away assuming Duelist. Then the leaks started complicating things.

The Case for Cyclops Being a Duelist
His Concussive Optic Blasts are the starting point for the Duelist argument. In Marvel Comics, Cyclops fires beams of concussive force from his eyes that are purely destructive with no healing utility attached to them. That power profile fits the Duelist role in Marvel Rivals far more naturally than anything else.
The Season 8 trailer backed this up visually. Cyclops was shown fighting his way through Alchemax soldiers, blasting through robots, and using his beams offensively throughout. The character has always been a damage-first mutant in his Marvel Comics history and Season 8.5 would be making a significant creative departure if NetEase moves away from that.

The Case for Cyclops Being a Strategist
After Marvel Rivals Season 8 launched, players found a new collectable called Punch Chronovium in the Battle Pass. The collectible is designed around Cyclops’ optic beams and has a support symbol at its center. That detail spread fast in the community and the Strategist theory took off from there.
NetEase has pulled this kind of move before with collectables that foreshadow a hero’s role. The support symbol on a Cyclops-themed item is hard to dismiss as coincidence. The obvious counter is that Cyclops and healing have never overlapped in the comics, but NetEase has creative freedom to change that. A Cyclops who uses his beams to both damage enemies and power up allies is not impossible, it would just be a new take on the character.
The Case for Cyclops Being a Vanguard
The most recent clue came from the new Alchemax HQ Doom map where Cyclops’ character model appeared in a life support chamber. His full in-game model was leaked shortly after and the community noticed how large he is. The build is comparable to confirmed Vanguards like Dr. Strange and Captain America.

A poll on MarvelRivals showed over 56% of players want Cyclops as a Vanguard based on that model. The main argument against it is that Devil Dinosaur was already confirmed as the Vanguard for Season 8.5, and two Vanguards in the same update would be unusual for NetEase’s release pattern.
What the Community Is Expecting
Three separate clues, three different roles, and no official confirmation from NetEase yet. The Season 8.5 Dev Vision preview is coming soon and that is when the role should finally be locked in. Based purely on Marvel Comics history and what was shown in the Season 8 trailer, Duelist is still the most grounded prediction. But the Punch Chronovium support symbol is the wildcard that keeps the Strategist theory alive.
Final Thoughts
Cyclops has managed to generate more role debate than any hero NetEase has announced so far. Duelist fits the comics. Strategist fits the collectable hint. Vanguard fits the character model. The Season 8.5 Dev Vision will settle it and that reveal is close. Until then the community keeps guessing.
