Crimson Desert should have been among the largest RPG releases of 2026. Pearl Abyss has been building hype with its realistic art direction and expansive adventure world.
They promised an engaging storyline, next-gen graphics, and an immersive world. Early players ranked it as a competitor for the year 2026. However, days after its launch, Crimson Desert is already receiving backlash.

Although players continue to celebrate the amazing gameplay, there has been growing criticism that something is amiss. On the surface, they appear to be ordinary fantasy paintings, battle scenes, warriors, and mythical creatures. Look closer, and it begins to fall apart.
Why Players Suspect AI-Generated Art in Crimson Desert
The suspicion did not appear out of the blue. In the last two years, gamers have grown quite familiar with the peculiarities of generative AI pictures in games. The typical distorted bodies, inconsistent details, and surreal compositions, you know.
These very types of abnormalities are now observed in the art of Crimson Desert. There are some pictures that seem to portray strangely shaped characters throughout the game.
On Bluesky, user Lex Luddy has posted a row of pictures of a lavish portrait, which, scrutinized more closely, features mushy-faced warriors on multi-limbed horses.

In their praise of the gameplay, Reddit user Ok-Error-403 also wrote that they were disappointed that the game implemented AI art every now and then. The user shared a picture showing a character holding up a bag with his right hand that has three fingers, while the left hand has four fingers.

Many of these don’t make sense or align with what Crimson Desert promised. They also bear resemblance to funny internet memes of AI-generated art.

The Timing Couldn’t Be Worse
The timing of this situation couldn’t be worse. Crimson Desert was just recently released. Instead of being talked about in forums for its beautiful gameplay, it is trending due to its graphics and AI use.
Although it has sold more than 2 million copies across all platforms within the first 24 hours of its release, the game has been walking a fine line with its reception.
On most platforms, the ratings have gone down. Crimson Desert has a 63.24 percent rating based on 32000+ reviews on Steam. Trending because of AI use is not really the type of buzz that developers want on launch week.
Why This Is a Big Deal
The main issue here is transparency. Game-focused online platforms such as Steam have also added rules that compel creators to report when they use generative AI in their games.
Gamers have the right to understand the production of a game, particularly in the case of creative work. The unavailability or lack of clarity of that disclosure creates alarm among gamers. Beyond policy, there’s also a creative debate happening.
The use of AI in games is a highly contentious issue among many artists and players, particularly when it is used to substitute or imitate human-made work. Others regard it as another instrument in the development process.
