Successful RPG Faces Physical Release Controversy
Even after a game launches successfully, crowdfunding ventures frequently encounter delivery issues. This problem is exemplified by the Chained Echoes instance. After its release, the retro-style role-playing game received favorable reviews and comments from players. However, fans who paid for these things have become frustrated due to a protracted delay in the delivery of physical versions.
As might be expected from a successful crowdfunding initiative, the game itself reached numerous milestones. Its turn-based combat, intricate plot, and traditional 16-bit visual style were all lauded by players. However, some of that accomplishment is now overshadowed by the unsolved shipping issues. The circumstance makes some backers wonder about crowdfunding initiatives’ accountability.
To create physical versions of the game, Matthias Linda, the developer, collaborated with First Press Games. These versions were intended for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Instead of the digital version that the majority of players already had, the partnership concentrated on collector-style releases.
An artbook was one of the bonus prizes offered by several Kickstarter contribution tiers. Linda mailed the gifts to supporters after handling them herself. However, First Press’s physical copies served as optional extras rather than essential campaign prizes. These editions were available for purchase through the publisher’s store for both normal customers and backers.

Preorders Opened in 2022 but Deliveries Lag
November 2022 saw the start of preorders for the physical editions. Depending on the version chosen, prices varied greatly. For PC, PlayStation 4, or Switch, a basic edition cost roughly $50, while a huge collector’s box may cost up to $354.
Preorders were introduced early, but supplies were still scarce. So yet, consumers have only been able to purchase the regular PlayStation 4 edition. On the publisher’s website, other versions are still listed as preorder products. Supporters who had long anticipated delivery became more irate due to this prolonged wait.
Developer Announces Plan for Legal Action
The continued delay pushed Matthias Linda to take stronger action. In a recent Kickstarter update, he confirmed the decision to end his business relationship with First Press Games. The developer also started preparations for a lawsuit related to the physical edition issue.
According to the update, more than two years passed since the original expected release date for most copies. The lack of progress left Linda with limited options. Ending the partnership became necessary after repeated delays without clear resolution.
Linda now offers solutions for supporters who backed the campaign directly. Eligible backers can request a refund or choose a replacement physical edition produced by another publisher. Details about the new partner remain undisclosed at this stage.
The offer only applies to people who supported the original Kickstarter campaign. Customers who purchased physical copies later through the publisher’s store must pursue other ways to recover their money. Legal limitations restrict the developer’s ability to extend the refund program beyond official backers.
Community Reaction and Possible Outcome
The community’s initial responses are cautiously optimistic. Even though the initiative is still in its early stages, supporters applaud the attempt to solve the problem. Many supporters are relieved that the developer publicly acknowledged the problem and offered straightforward fixes.
A clear timeline for refunds or replacement editions has not yet appeared. Still, the update suggests progress after a long period of uncertainty. If the legal process and new publishing arrangement move forward smoothly, this difficult chapter in the Chained Echoes story could eventually reach a reasonable conclusion.
