April Fools’ Day has never ceased to be a trap for gamers. One minute you are excited to have a new game revealed and the next minute you are watching a ridiculous trailer and asking yourself how you ever got sucked into it. And in 2026, the gaming studios staked everything on it.

Incorporating playable modes of jokes into fake game announcements that were far too real, April 1, 2026, brought both laughs, confusion, and moments when gamers had no idea what was real or not. Here’s the best of everything that happened.

PUBG: Battlegrounds Became a Massive Game of Hide-and-Seek

PUBG: Battlegrounds was one of the best jokes turned into a playable experience. The game also added a Prop Hunt mode that lasted temporarily, and players could disguise themselves as common objects that were scattered across the map.

Rather than hard-fought gun battles, matches transformed into disorganized hide-and-seek games. The players were divided into hunters and props; the hunters were supposed to find suspicious things, as props scrambled to be part of the environment.

Fire at the wrong target? You lose health. Wait too long? Hunters receive a power boost. It was ridiculous, tense, and unexpectedly entertaining, which is exactly what the content of April Fools should be.

Pokémon “Pokopia” Inflatable Sudowoodo

The Pokémon brand embraced ridiculous comedy with the joke “Pokopia,” which was a reference to a classic comedy joke. Rather than a serious game unveiling, fans got served with a bizarre idea that seemed like a crossover between Pokémon and meme culture.

It introduced the inflatable arm-flailing tube man, Sudowoodo. It was funny because it struck the right balance between absurdity and being so well done that it might be real. And, quite frankly, it is the charm of a good April Fools prank in gaming; there has to be enough realism to everything to make you doubt it.

Fortnite Went All In

Fortnite is one game that can survive on mayhem, and 2026 confirmed that it can. There was a temporary version of the game where the player had some large heads, no fall damage, and could use finger guns.

The largest one of them, you could ride llamas (or other players). It was nonsense, but deliberate nonsense. These interim developments turned the competitive aspect of the game upside down, and the players were reminded that they should not take everything so seriously.

Among Us Went Back in Time

Among Us added a Nostalgia Mode in a notably nostalgic move. The game was more of a throwback to its original, more basic design, with old sprites and old graphics.

To old-school players, it was like going back to the time when the game first became popular. To younger players, it was a look back in time. This trick was effective since it was not merely amusing but meaningful.

Yes, that actually happened. The Sonic team uploaded a limited line of Sanic-themed t-shirts, featuring badly drawn renditions of box arts involving “Shedew” and “Knackles.”

False Game Announcements Felt Real

In addition to funny jokes in the gaming industry, 2026 also had some truly believable fake announcements. One of the largest was NieR: Cosmic Horror, which was hinted at on April 1 by Square Enix.

The news was so secretive and refined that the fans did not know whether it was a hoax or not. That is where April Fools’ Day becomes unsafe to gamers, in that there are cases where the developer takes the joke too far, to the point where some elements begin to seem realistic.

The Reason April Fools Day Still Matters

April Fool’s Day is not just a joke but a mirror of the gaming culture. It helps developers to test their creative concepts, interact more with their communities, and express a more human side. And even these jokes sometimes give rise to actual features afterwards.

History has proved that certain fake ideas may eventually turn out to be real games. However, more importantly, it gives the whole industry a respite. In the month of layoffs, big announcements, and stiff competition, April 1 is the month of pure fun.
