James Bond fans have been waiting more than fourteen years to get a video game that reflects the refined spy vibe instead of the action-hero vibe. IO Interactive, the masters of the Hitman series, is finally filling that gap with 007: First Light.

007: First Light is not just another shooter. Early previews show it as a carefully written origin story that traces the life of a young and impulsive recruit to the secret agent of the same legend that we know today. Let’s dive into this early 007: First Light preview.

Designed as a reimagining of the franchise in the present day, 007: First Light puts the players in the shiny shoes of a twenty-something James Bond. This is not the mature veteran of the Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig days but a rough young MI6 recruit who is gaining his 00 reputation.

The story takes place in both the frozen tundra of Iceland and a gaming casino party in the Kensington area of London. Early hands-on previews from major outlets show that the game starts with an explosive mission in Iceland. Bond encounters a ruthless organization stealing secret technology at a remote facility, setting off a global chase to find those responsible.

Throughout the game, the players will also encounter reimagined versions of classic characters such as Q and Moneypenny as well as new characters such as Dr. Selena Tan, who oversees the agency training program of the Tac-Sim.

IO Interactive has been able to combine the social stealth of Hitman with the cinematic, momentum-driven spectacle of Uncharted. First Light has punchier gameplay.

Bond is supposed to be enterprising, and he would go through the challenges with his surroundings and charisma. The Bluff Skill is one of the most prominent attributes. This mechanic also enables Bond to employ his wit to talk his way out of trouble.

There are scenes of Bond being in a near unconscious state and persuading a patrolman that the guard had had a medical emergency. The transformation of recognizable Bond jokes into real mechanics play adds a sense of characterization never witnessed in the franchise.

There is no Bond game without toys. The Q-Watch and Q-Vision are available to the players. It gives players the ability to hack into the environment, similar to Watch Dogs. Fax machines can be sabotaged to create distractions or doors can be locked remotely to isolate threats.

Although stealth is the focus, the game presents a high-speed action stage called License to Kill. The fighting becomes fierce and flowing when the silence is broken. Players are able to shoot weapons out of the hands of their enemies. They also can catch weapons in the air or even throw empty magazines at the enemies.

As you face recurring enemies like a henchman battle that recurs in London, you will need to adapt your tactics because they learn from your previous encounters with them. Tac-Sim Mode is added to those who miss the anything-goes aspect of Hitman.

This mode is found in the Q-Branch of MI6 and uses variations or experimental gadgets and even the silly cosmetic options, like using gold jackets to replay missions. It is a diegetic training ground where players are able to practice their skills without the seriousness of the main story.
